Caslick’s offense and Guei’s defense takes HSU to victory

Colin Caslick hit for a season-high 14 points
Box Score ARCATA – With its number one option and leading scorer having an off-night, Humboldt State saw its guards – Colin Caslick and Allan Guei – take the team to victory.

The Caslick-Guei combo paced the Lumberjacks on both ends of the floor to take the home club over Cal State East Bay, 84-80, on Thursday night in Lumberjack Arena.

The HSU backcourt mates teamed up for a combined 36 points including freshman Caslick's season-high of 14 points, while Guei held Cal State East Bay's Jacari Whitfield in check at six points.

"Down the stretch, a freshman player, who has played in big games in Oregon state playoffs, had ice water in his veins. Caslick went from not making the travel team last weekend to our 'go-to guy' down the stretch tonight in a game critical for us to win. He not only hit jumpers, but his freshman body (of work) was impressive," explained HSU head coach Steve Kinder.

Guei led the Jacks with 22 points, but it was his defensive prowess was what stood out to his coach.

"Guei, once again, was a warrior. He showed toughness and attacked," said Kinder. "From a coach's viewpoint, it was all about his defense against Whitfield as he made him work for everything over the whole 94 feet of the court."

On his 22-point game-best night, Guei reached the amount by making eight of 12 shots and six of seven from the foul line. He handed out a game-high six assists and pulled down four rebounds.

The HSU point guard, though, held the Pioneers' Whitfield to six points or half of his season average.

The Jacks (9-12) win snaps a three-game losing skid and improves the club to 4-11 in the California Collegiate Athletic Conference.

Caslick made five of eight shots to reach his season-high of his first collegiate campaign.

Center Brandon Pomrehn hooked 14 points on seven of eight tries from the floor, all in the first half.

Jordan Mackie dumped in a pair of 3-pointers and 12 total points. The CCAA's leading-scorer, David Howard chipped in 10 points in 16 minutes of play.

Jermain Wilson gave 15 solid minutes off the bench with six points, four boards and two blocks.

Cal State East Bay received big nights from Gabe Kindred and Jarred Jourdan with 20 and 19 points, respectively.

Trailing 21-20 after 11 minutes of play, HSU netted the next 12 points, 32-21, and never lost the advantage the rest of the night behind four points from both Pomrehn and Caslick in the run.

HSU led by as many as 17 points, 69-52, with eight minutes left, before Cal State East Bay (7-14/4-11 CCAA) made a run.

The Pioneers worked the margin down to three points twice in the final five minutes but could get no closer before the 84-80 final.

The Jacks will look for its first CCAA home sweep of the season on Saturday night when they host the Otters of Cal State Monterey Bay at 7:30 p.m.

"We would love to string two wins together," admitted Kinder. "Monterey Bay will be coming off a win at Cal Poly Pomona (60-57) so they'll be rejuvenated and also trying to make a run at the end of the season like we are."
