Box Score ARCATA – The Humboldt State men's basketball engine sputtered in the final minutes and Cal State Monterey Bay pounced for the 76-67 win.
The Otters took the lead on a Ryan Nitz jumper with 4:52 left and never gave up the advantage the rest of the way.
"I credit Monterey Bay for coming into an impressive crowd and beating an opponent on the road again. For beating Cal Poly Pomona (on Thursday night) and us, they became great 'Road Warriors' (this weekend)," stated HSU head coach
Steve Kinder.
Both teams connected for 24 baskets, but the free throw line trips proved to be a big difference.
"Credit Monterey Bay again for getting to the free throw line 36 times against us and making us foul them 26 times," added the Lumberjacks coach. "The put us out of position defensively and fundamentally out of our stances and we put them to the free throw line."
The Otters (8-11/6-10 California Collegiate Athletic Association) made 24 of their 36 free throw attempts to outscore the Jacks (9-13/4-12 CCAA) by 10 points, one point shy of the final score difference.
The HSU tandem of
David Howard and
Allan Guei accounted for over two-thirds of the team's offense. The junior pair hit for 42 of the Jacks' 67 points on the night.
Howard made eight of 16 attempts for 22 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Right behind, Guei down seven of 10 tries for 20 points to go with five assists.
Cal State Monterey Bay had four players in double-digits with center Kris Gallop's 17 points leading the list.
In the first half, HSU built a lead of as many as 10 points, 26-16, with four minutes left. The Otters rallied to cut it to two points, 31-29, at intermission.
The Jacks came out and reestablished their margin to nine points, 44-35, early on.
Cal State Monterey Bay rebounded to tie the game, 52-52, at the midway point, before edging ahead for good four minutes later.
HSU will hit the road next week starting with a Friday contest at San Francisco State in a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
