ARCATA — "Competitive and fun" is what can be expected when Chico State comes to Redwood Bowl for the track and field Humboldt Invitational on Saturday.
"It will be a classic dual meet and will be competitive and fun," said HSU track and field head coach
Scott Pesch. "The forecast is for no rain or adverse conditions."
The throwing events, which begin at 11 a.m., and the middle distance races will provide the most competition head-to-head against Chico. The Wildcats finished in the nation's Top 10 for both the men and women's teams last year.
"They are bringing some of their top kids," said Pesch. "It will provide a strong competitive field for some of our student-athletes who have had success already this year, such as
Chester O'Neal, Frederick Rosser and
Kaytee Krivulka."
O'Neal's best event is the hammer throw. Rosser will run in either the 100-meter or 400-meter hurdles, and Krivulka is well versed in all the throws. Matt Horsfall, the CCAA Track Athlete of the Week after his 210-11 throw in the javelin at the Kim Duyst Invitational, likely will not be participating. He will be recovering from an injury suffered during his last throw in Turlock.
Devon Kelsey and
Jantzen Oshier will be running in their first track meet of the season. Kelsey will be running in the women's 1500-meter, while Oshier will run in the men's 1500-meter. Oshier was second in the 1500 at the CCAA championships last year after winning that race at the CCAA championships in 2012.
"They have had a good winter to prepare," Pesch said. "This meet will show us how much fine-tuning they need to do. It will also help them to get ready for the Oregon and Stanford meets later this season. They are some of our top point-getters."
The running events begin at noon with the last race scheduled for 3 p.m. While it will be scored as a dual meet between Humboldt and Chico, the event is an open invitational and many local unattached athletes are expected to participate, as well as student-athletes from College of the Redwoods.
