Jacks Boot Urban Knights, Net Most Goals in Seven Seasons

TURLOCK, Calif. — Seniors Maddi Null and Colette Behen each scored once and assisted on the other's goal in the opening 18 minutes of Humboldt State women's soccer, 4-0, shutout victory over Academy of Art Thursday afternoon.

The Lumberjacks four-goal outburst is their highest single-game goal total in seven seasons. The last time HSU scored four goals came on Aug. 30, 2007 in a 4-3 home win over Saint Martin's, a time period spanning 127 matches.

"The girls worked very hard this evening and a great deal of credit needs to go to Academy of Art because they made us earn everything," said HSU Head Coach Paul Karver. "We need to be better in defending one-on-one, especially in the middle of the park."

Following Behen's score, Taylor McMillin made it a three-goal lead 33:03 into the contest. Freshman Marquel Love completed the scoring with her first collegiate goal in the 77th minute.

HSU keepers Amber Woolcock and Megan Wade combined for the first shutout since playing to a scoreless tie against Cal State Monterey Bay last Oct. 13. In over 63 minutes of action, Woolcock snatched three saves. Wade logged the final 26 minutes, saved two shots and added an assist on the team's final goal.

Lizzie Mitchell attempted three shots, while both Sammie Morris and Angel Gosse had two. HSU (2-1) outshot Academy of Art (0-3), 17-12, on the day.

"It was always our plan to play as many players as we could this weekend and it was fun to see our subs step up and contribute," said Karver.

In the opening 18 minutes, it was the Null and Behen show. Behen tossed the ball in to Null, who dribbled the ball for some space and fired a clean shot from the penalty kick line for the first scored at 9:00. Null booted a crossing pass to the front right where Behen connected on a crossing shot to make it 2-0 with 18:05 into the match.

Off a corner kick by Jillian Andersen, McMillin headed the ball past the Urban Knights' keeper at 33:03 for the third opening half score.

For the final score at 76:56, Wade drove a long goal kick down the field where Love took the bounce in front of an Academy of Art defender and drove it to the top left corner of the goal.

HSU will complete its part of the Warrior Classic on Saturday morning in an 11:30 a.m. match against Simon Fraser.

"We will have to be better on Saturday when we play a good Simon Frasier team," finished Karver.
