Jacks Net Four Unanswered Second Half Goals to Defeat Clan

Box Score TURLOCK, Calif. — Trailing by a goal in the 57th minute of the second half, the Humboldt State women's soccer offense came alive to net four unanswered goals in less than 10 minutes to defeat Simon Fraser, 4-2, Saturday in the Cal State Stanislaus Warrior Classic.

With the win, the Lumberjacks (3-1) equaled their start to the 2013 season due to the play of the three seniors – Lizzie Mitchell, Colette Behen and Maddi Null – who combined for three goals and seven points.

The four HSU goals and the four scored in Thursday's 4-0 shutout over Academy of Art are the most goals the team has scored in back-to-back matches since opening the 2006 season with shutouts of Southern Oregon (4-0) and Oregon Tech (5-0). The Jacks' 10 goals in four matches are two shy of their 2013 total of 12 goals in 18 matches.

"Our goal this weekend was to come away with two convincing victories, and we were able to do that," said HSU Head Coach Paul Karver. "Simon Fraser may be one of the hardest working groups we have seen or will see. Their staff and players deserve a great deal of credit."

HSU failed to put a ball in the net despite taking the match's only eight shots of the first half. Olivia Aguiar headed the ball past the Jacks keeper to give the Clan (0-4) the lead at 42:38.

Eleven minutes into the second half, the three HSU seniors took over the match. Behen lofted a long free kick, which Null picked up and blasted it off the Simon Fraser goalie. Mitchell was on the spot to finish to tie the match at 56:59.

Exactly three minutes later, Marquel Love made a short pass to Mitchell, who dribbled to the side and crossed it to Null in the box. Null buried the ball in the top left corner for HSU's first lead, 2-1.

At 65:25, Behen made her own play. The Jacks midfielder took the ball to the top left corner of the box, before booting a crossing shot to the right side of the net for a 3-1 HSU advantage.

"Giving the goal late in the first half really put us in hole.  The girls responded and showed a great deal of character and belief," said Karver.

Following her first score on Thursday night, Taylor McMillin received the ball after passes from Mitchell and Lindsey Millen and belted the ball past the Clan keeper in the 84th minute to complete the HSU scoring, 4-1.

With less than two minutes left, Aguiar added her second score of the day to make Simon Fraser's final deficit two goals, 4-2.

Amber Woolcock picked up her third victory in net and she saved two shots over 86 minutes. Megan Wade logged the final four minutes.

For the second time in the Warrior Classic, HSU was able to get everyone in the contest. The Jacks full roster helped the team post its most shots in a game this season with 20 compared to nine by the Clan.

"Playing everybody the way we did will make us stronger in the long run even though we gave a goal away at the end.  We believe in every player on our roster and we have proven that we can get the job done with any combination of players we need to," said Karver.

In next week's Lumberjack Classic, the Jacks will host the Hawks of Holy Names Thursday at 1:30 p.m. in their home opener.
