ARCATA, Calif. — With all signs pointing to a tie,
Maddi Null blasted a looping 30-plus yard game-winning goal with 24 seconds left in the second overtime to give Humboldt State a 2-1 victory over BYU-Hawaii.
Null received a short pass by
Lindsey Millen on the left sideline and connected on a 30-plus yard shot. Her long-range shot hooked in the air, before it hugged inside the left goal post to give the Lumberjacks their fifth win in six matches.
"Today was a tale of two halves. We played very well in the first and then they took it to us in the second," said Jacks' Head Coach
Paul Karver. "Winning a game like that in double overtime shows the quality of this group."
The improved HSU team has led to its 5-1 mark and ties the program's best start to a season since beginning the 2002 season with the same record. The Jacks five-match winning streak is its first such run since winning six in a row during the 2001 campaign.
Taylor McMillin started the match's scoring with less than three minutes left in the opening half. Off a corner kick from
Colette Behen, McMillin headed the ball into the net past the BYU-Hawaii (1-4) keeper into the left side of the net for her fourth score of the year.
Only 44 seconds into the second half, the Seasiders' Tess Hobbs tied the match, 1-1, from 10 yards away for the only other regulation goal.
HSU outshot the visitors by a wide margin, 19-5 total and 4-1 in the overtime periods. Goalie
Amber Woolcock made three saves.
"Today was a great way for us to finish the preseason, now we need to carry this momentum into the game against East Bay," said Karver.
HSU will have its first California Collegiate Athletic Association test of the year next Friday. The Jacks travel to Hayward, Calif., to play the Pioneers of Cal State East Bay starting at 4:30 p.m.
