HAYWARD, Calif. — For the fifth match in a row,
Taylor McMillin found the back of the net. McMillin's Friday night goal proved to be the game-winner to take Humboldt State women's soccer team over Cal State East Bay, 3-2, to help her team to its sixth victory in a row.
After a flurry of three goals between the two teams in less than three minutes, McMillin gathered
Erica McMullen's crossing pass into the penalty kick area and converted it for the third Lumberjack goal and final score of the match.
"The Heart Attack Kids did it again. This is a special group and the belief they share is real," said HSU Head Coach
Paul Karver. "For us to go on the road and win against a very good East Bay team, this is a great step for this program."
With the victory, HSU (6-1) recorded its first California Collegiate Athletic Association opening win victory. The Jacks were 0-7-1 in their previous CCAA opening matches.
The HSU victory is its sixth win in a row and equals the longest winning streak since the 2006 season.
Following an hour delay to the match due to an officials assignment error, the visitors had to come back from a first half deficit.
At 4:58, the Pioneers (3-3-2/0-1 CCAA) put in the opening half's lone goal.
"Halftime could have been shaky, but when we walked into the locker room they were laughing and confident. This group loves to win games. We unleashed them and they pursued the game like a hungry pack of wolves," said Karver. "We had to overcome so much today with the long delay, the 1-0 deficit at half and the momentum shifts at 2-2. This group's character continues to grow."
HSU's
Colette Behen tied the match, 1-1, when she connected on a
Courtney Rebata pass from the left corner into the upper goal at 62:11.
McMullen pushed the Jacks ahead exactly two minutes later, 2-1, off a 30-yard strike from the right corner.
In 26 seconds, Cal State East Bay tied the match by putting in a rebound off the crossbar.
McMillin netted the game-winner 15 minutes later off the crossing pass at 79:41.
The Jacks outshot the Pioneers, 10-8. Goalie
Amber Woolcock registered a pair of saves.
HSU will have Saturday off before it plays at No. 20 Sonoma State on Sunday morning at 11:30 a.m.
