ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — It took a nationally-ranked opponent to end the Lumberjack women's soccer team's six-match winning streak on Sunday. No. 20 Sonoma State headed the go ahead score in the 51
st minute to edge Humboldt State, 2-1.
Trailing 1-0 at the half, the Jacks'
Courtney Rebata headed the game-tying goal only 1:11 into the second half. The tie did not last long. On a header of her own, Sonoma State's Melissa LaFranchi scored the game-winning goal at 50:45.
"Sonoma is a fantastic team, they deserve a great deal of credit for how they handled the game today," said HSU Head Coach
Paul Karver. "We grew up in the second half, but we needed to start with that maturity and we didn't do it."
For only the second time this season, HSU came away on the short end. The Jacks fell to 6-2 overall (1-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association) with both loses coming at the hands of a nationally-ranked opponent. In the season opener, HSU lost a 2-0 decision to then No.3-ranked Western Washington.
The Seawolves (9-0/2-0 CCAA) put their ninth shot of the first half into the back of the net. With 21 seconds remaining in the half, McKenzie Maher hit a close range attempt for the 1-0 home lead.
Following a home foul,
Colette Behen started the play, which ended when Rebata headed the ball in to the goal at 46:11.
After not registering a first half shot, HSU was outshot 8-7 in the second 45 minutes. Sonoma State posted a 17-7 match advantage.
HSU goalie
Amber Woolcock stopped six shots in net and the team's defense saved a final home attempt.
The Jacks' tough schedule continues next week.
"We start the season with one of the hardest schedules in the conference, and now we have to prepare for No. 3 Cal State Stanislaus on Friday," said Karver.
HSU will travel to Turlock, Calif., to battle Cal State Stanislaus in a 7 p.m. Friday night match.
