MONMOUTH, Ore. — In dramatic fashion,
Courtney Rebata headed teammate
Colette Behen's corner kick into the net at 5:36 into overtime to propel Humboldt State women's soccer to a 2-1 victory Saturday over Western Oregon.
Coming into the contest one minute prior, Rebata posted her first goal and game-winner as a Lumberjack player. The HSU victory helps the team split its two-game swing against Great Northwest Athletic Conference opponents following a 2-0 loss to No. 3 Western Washington Thursday night.
"Heading into overtime we knew we needed to change things up and we knew that Courtney would do that for us," said HSU Head Coach
Paul Karver. "Today felt good from the sense that we pulled it out when we really shouldn't have, that's what great teams do. Western Oregon is a well-coached, very organized group that will be a contender in the GNAC. Getting a result on the second half of a tough weekend really shows how far we have come."
Jacks' co-captain
Lizzie Mitchell netted the first goal of the day.
Maddi Null played the ball behind the Wolves' defense, where Mitchell booted it into the lower left part of the net at 16:34.
The HSU lead did not last even 10 minutes. At 26:14, Western Oregon (0-1) saw Makana Pundyke chip the ball over HSU goalie
Amber Woolcock into the goal to tie the match, 1-1.
"For the second game in a row we have given a very soft goal but our defensive and goalkeeping unit is brand new and learning fast, it won't happen again," said Karver.
The game remained 1-1 through the rest of regulation until Rebata's game-winning header.
The Wolves outshot the Jacks, 13-10, while Woolcock saved four of the five attempts on goal.
Erica McMullen and
Madi Payne added one shot apiece to the HSU shot total.
HSU will travel to Cal State Stanislaus in Turlock, Calif., to face Academy of Art in a 4:30 p.m. Thursday afternoon match.
