The Lumberjacks face the Broncos Friday and Tritons Saturday. Both games tip off at 7:30 p.m.
HSU picked up California Collegiate Athletic Association victories against Cal State East Bay and Cal State Monterey Bay over the weekend. The home sweep of the Pioneers and Otters moved the Jacks to 5-5 in conference play and tied for the sixth spot in the CCAA standings.
"It feels good (to be at .500 in league play). It has only been 17 or 18 days to go from last to mid-pack and in playoff contention," said Head Coach
Steve Kinder. "If we don't continue to play well we can see things revert back or, if we play well, we can put ourselves in position to start talking championship."
Last season, the Jacks went 0-4 against the Broncos and Tritons. HSU opens this weekend with a matchup with Cal Poly Pomona, a team it has lost to three straight times on the road.
"Our opponent is well-coached and they all have length and athleticism. Coach (Greg) Kamansky is renowned for his matchup zone defense in the college basketball community," said Kinder. "They are very comfortable with a 56-54 lead with two minutes left and know how to close games out."
The Broncos have won four of their last five games but lost to Cal State Los Angeles, 58-56, last Saturday.
Terrence Drisdom is Cal Poly Pomona's leading scorer and ranks second in the CCAA averaging 16.3 points per game. He has scored 10 or more points in every game this season and averaged 13 points per game last weekend. He also leads the CCAA with 2.1 steals per game.
HSU senior
Allan Guei sank the game-winning shot against Cal State Monterey Bay in Saturday's home win and is excited about this weekend's challenge.
"Both teams are doing extremely well right now, but we are just going to take it one game at a time," said Guei. "Today we have a practice and we are going to listen to everything coach tells us. We will be ready for another tough battle on Friday."
HSU's league-leading offense will take on the CCAA's top defensive unit Friday night in Kellogg Gym. The Jacks boast the conference's best scoring offense and average 76.3 points per game in CCAA play, five points more than No. 2-ranked Cal State Monterey Bay (71.3).
One of the focuses of the Green and Gold will be to avoid a letdown on night two, regardless of the result versus the Broncos. On the last road trip, Guei sank another game-winning basket to lead HSU past Chico State, but the Green and Gold lost Saturday at Cal State Stanislaus.
"Getting them ready for another game within a 24-hour period is the tough part," said Kinder. "We can't think in terms of conserving our players' fuel. It is about getting good rest and getting in the training room after Friday night's game."
