Love Nets First Goal to Give Women’s Soccer Road Win

BELMONT, Calif. – In the middle of the grueling California Collegiate Athletic Association season, Humboldt State women's soccer scheduled a non-conference match to break up the bye week.  The Lumberjacks (7-4-1, 3-2-1) traveled down to Notre Dame de Namur (2-8-0, 2-3-0) and defeated the Pac West Conference opponent, 1-0, on Monday afternoon.

"The girls played very well today for stretches against a very difficult NDNU team," said Head Coach Paul Karver. "The midfield played a huge role today because they allowed us to keep the ball and build play more than we have in the past few games."

Playing on a very hot turf field, the Jacks capitalized on an early attacking opportunity. HSU brought the ball up from the defense, connecting a series of passes in the process. The ball found its way up to Courtney Rebata who was able to dribble past her defender and find a running Marquel Love. Without hesitation, Love was able to slide the ball past the keeper from the right side of the box and score her first goal of the year in the sixth minute of play. Rebata's assist was her team-leading third of the season.

The 1-0 score line held throughout the match, and the Jacks earned the victory. Humboldt State outshot Notre Dame de Namur 8-6 in the match, despite conceding six corner kicks. CCAA saves leader, Caitlin Plese, added four saves to her conference high.

"It was great to get Marquel on the scoring sheet," said Karver. "Especially with a goal that took a great deal of skill to finish."

The Green and Gold return to action on Friday, with UC San Diego coming to College Creek Field for a 3 p.m. game. The CCAA match is one of four in Arcata over the next two weeks, with conference opponents playing on HSU's campus on Oct. 16, 18, 23, and 25.
