ARCATA, Calif. – Senior
Caitlin Plese tied her season-high with 16 saves in Friday's California Collegiate Athletic Association match between Humboldt State and UC San Diego. Despite the efforts of the CCAA's saves leader to keep the Lumberjacks (7-5-1, 3-3-1) in the match, UC San Diego (9-4-1, 5-3-1) defeated the home side, 1-0.
"San Diego is a very good team," said Head Coach
Paul Karver. "They deserve credit for the goal they scored."
Following a foul in the 21
st minute, UCSD earned a free kick from about 40 yards out. The Tritons played the ball into a congested penalty box and Katie O'Laughlin sent a header off the crossbar and back into the swarm of players. Kierra Bocchino was quick to react and fired back a header of her own into the back of the net.
The Jacks had a few decent looks at net, with
Bridget Daley getting off two shots in the run of play and
Jillian Andersen taking a pair of strikes off set pieces. Humboldt finished with five shots, compared to 23 by UC San Diego.
Plese's 16 saves increased her lead as the conference's top goalkeeper in that category. The graduate transfer now has 94 on the year through 13 games.
"We were very sharp in a number of aspects but unfortunately couldn't find the back of the net," said Karver.
The Jacks will have little time to dwell on the loss, as the team returns to College Creek Field on Sunday for an 11:30 a.m. matchup against Cal State San Marcos. This will be the first ever meeting between the two program
