SEASIDE, Calif. – For over 85 minutes, Humboldt State women's soccer held the lead against California Collegiate Athletic Association opponent Cal State Monterey Bay. The Lumberjacks (6-4-0, 3-2-0) erased a two-match slide and earned three points after shutting out Monterey Bay (3-7-0, 0-4-0) on Friday, 1-0.
"Monterey is a very difficult place to play," said Head Coach
Paul Karver. "If you look at their home results over the years they have had big wins against big teams. That makes today's win even more important."
HSU has been able to capitalize on the counterattack all season, and Friday was no exception. The Jacks worked the ball up from the back line, and made a path towards goal due to the clever footwork of freshman
Bridget Daley. The first-year player shot a rocket towards net, which was pushed away by the Monterey Bay keeper. The ball bounced to the foot of fellow newcomer
Alex Jenkins who took a one-time strike to bury the ball into the back of the net. Jenkins is now tied with Daley for the team lead with four goals on the season.
Goalkeeper
Caitlin Plese recorded five saves en route to her second CCAA shutout and fourth overall on the year. Plese faced all seven Otter shots in the first half, with nothing getting to the graduate transfer after intermission. The Jacks totaled five shots, including the only two after halftime.
"The girls had a great deal of heart today," said Karver. "We didn't play very well, but the heart got us the win."
The Jacks will travel to San Francisco State on Sunday for an 11:30 a.m. match. The Gators were unbeaten in conference play entering Friday, but fell to Sonoma State, 1-0.
