Women’s Soccer Earns Fourth Point of Weekend Following Draw

SAN FRANCISCO – Humboldt State women's soccer has yet to lose a conference game on the road this season. After opening California Collegiate Athletic Association play with a pair of road victories, the Lumberjacks (6-4-1, 3-2-1) collected a win on Friday and earned a tie on Sunday morning at San Francisco State (6-3-2, 2-1-2).

"We had to really grind to get the result today because of how good San Francisco was and how hard their field was to play on," said Head Coach Paul Karver.

The Jacks, like most of their games this season, were outshot throughout the 110 minutes of action. The Gators fired off 27 shots, as compared to just five for HSU. The first shot of the game for the Green and Gold was the one that put the Jacks ahead. Following a San Francisco State foul, the Jacks earned a free kick from about 30 yards out. Freshman Bridget Daley finished her team-leading fifth goal of the season off the ensuing free kick.

Humboldt took the lead into the second half, but a mishap in the 57th minute evened the score. The Jacks allowed an own goal off a failed clearance, giving the Gators their lone goal of the match.

The score remained tied for the rest of the match, as HSU was able to hold off six additional Gator shots in two overtime sessions to earn its first tie of the season. Goalkeeper Caitlin Plese finished the match with seven saves and lowered her goals against average to 1.11 through 11 games.

"The girls never quit, and the heart they showed this weekend is a testament to how much they believe in each other," said Karver. "Not everybody goes on this road trip and gets four points."

The Jacks will take a short break from the CCAA schedule and travel to non-conference opponent Notre Dame de Namur on Oct. 12. Humboldt State will then open its final home stand of the season with four CCAA teams coming to College Creek Field beginning with UC San Diego on Oct. 16.
