ARCATA, Calif. – Senior
Jillian Andersen notched her first goal in the Green and Gold as she led Humboldt State past Cal State East Bay 1-0 Friday afternoon at College Creek Field.
With the win, HSU improved to 8-5-2 overall and 4-3-2 in conference play. East Bay moved to 5-10 overall and 3-6 against CCAA opposition.
"Our bench attitude and mentality made all the difference today," said Head Coach
Paul Karver. "I am proud that our team was able to go out there, grind out a win and get a hard-fought three points for us."
Andersen's goal came late in the first half with 9:05 remaining until intermission. The senior from Santa Rosa, Calif., booted a free kick from 30 yards out that was caught by Pioneer keeper Katelyn Oshima, but she stepped backward into the goal after catching it. It was HSU's fourth shot of the game.
"This was a special performance for Jillian," said Karver. "She hits our set pieces from deep. We always tell her that if she has a good feeling about it, then let it go. It was so great for her as a senior and someone very important to our program to have a special moment like that."
The Pioneers had several offensive opportunities and finished with four corner kicks, seven shots and four shots on goal. East Bay's Janis Gamboa paced the team with two shots.
Senior
Caitlin Plese put together another outstanding performance in goal for the Jacks. She compiled four saves in the shutout victory.
HSU wraps its home schedule with a Senior Day celebration Sunday, Oct. 25, in College Creek Field against Stanislaus State. The game will begin at 11:30 a.m. and Senior Day festivities will start prior to the game.
"Sunday is going to be wild," said Karver. "We are playing for the playoffs – both teams will be fighting for their playoff lives. If you want to come see a great game, and watch players that fight and believe in what they are doing, then you better come out on Sunday."
