ARCATA, Calif. – Despite leading by just one point at halftime, Humboldt State turned up the tempo in the second half and outscored Bristol 54-38 in Wednesday night's 93-76 exhibition win.
"We got better by playing a very good and athletic Bristol team," said Head Coach
Steve Kinder. "I believe Bristol will go on to beat a lot of people this year and maybe even shock a Division I program or two. They were a formidable opponent."
HSU opened the second period with a 9-0 run, and
Tyras Rattler supplied 14 points to the Green and Gold's second-half push.
Malik Morgan led all Lumberjack scorers with 19 points and was 7-for-13 from the field. The Eugene, Ore., native also dished out a team-high five assists.
Morgan and Rattler weren't the only double-digit scorers for the Green and Gold; four other Jacks reached double figures.
Rakim Brown (18),
Justin Everett (13),
Jack Kaub (11) and
Thomas Witzel (11) each scored 10 or more points.
HSU rebounded from 33.3 percent shooting in the first 20 minutes and was 19-for-31 (61.3 percent) shooting after the intermission. The Jacks outrebounded the Bears 44-34.
"I was happy with the whole roster tonight, especially in terms of our communication," said Kinder. "Malik and Rakim both played extremely well – and they should. The biggest surprise was
Justin Everett. His job was to get junk and put-backs underneath, and he did just that."
The Green and Gold return to action in two weeks with a Tuesday, Nov. 17, meeting with Southern Oregon in Lumberjack Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
