LISTEN LIVE ON ESPN 92.7 FM / 1340 AM ARCATA, Calif. – Humboldt State men's basketball opens its 2015-16 California Collegiate Athletic Conference schedule at Cal State San Marcos Thursday. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m., and the game will be played at the MiraCosta College gymnasium.
The undefeated 4-0 Lumberjacks have enjoyed the atmosphere of their home court to start the season, and Thursday's meeting with the Cougars will be their first road game of the season. San Marcos is 2-3 to begin the year and has lost three consecutive games against Azusa Pacific, BYU-Hawaii and Chaminade, respectively.
Thursday will be the first meeting between the HSU and San Marcos, but it will be a homecoming of sorts for Green and Gold head coach
Steve Kinder. Kinder played collegiately at MiraCosta before transferring to Humboldt State.
COACH KINDER QUOTESON THE PLAYING STYLE OF SAN MARCOS"We have watched a lot of video tape on their first four games, and they have played in some close games against worthy opponents. They like to dribble penetrate and get into the paint. San Marcos also has some spot up shooters that can knock down shots. They are a strong, physical and athletic team, which will pose a threat."
ON THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE FIRST CONFERENCE GAME"Our guys know this is a significant game because it is a conference game. Each game counts toward the tournament whether that tournament is the NCAA or CCAA tournament. These games matter as much now is they will in March."
ON THE EARLY SUCCESS OF RAKIM BROWN"Rakim will have a target on his back in these games, and he welcomes that challenge. He is a proven commodity in the conference. His hard work in the summer and leadership this fall has paid off."
ON THE OFFENSIVE PHILOSOPHY OF THE TEAM"When
Malik Morgan has the ball in his hands we will get that ball movement we want. We know Malik will do the right thing with the basketball, and I am very comfortable with him as our quarterback on the court."
ON THE RETURN OF WILL TAYLOR"Will is a utility player that we can use at so many different positions. He is solid physically and defensively, and he has a great attitude. We appreciate his versatility."
ON CONCERNS HEADING INTO THE GAME VERSUS SAN MARCOS"I am concerned about our team playing on the road for the first time this year. It's concerning that we are on the road, there may be a small crowd and we are playing at a junior college gym. But when the ball goes up, we still have to play the game of basketball."
