With only eight games remaining in the regular season, the Lumberjacks visit the first of their final four road opponents, all of which the Green and Gold have beaten once this season. HSU faces Cal State LA Friday and Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday. Both games tip off at 7:30 p.m.
The Green and Gold made quick work of the opposition last weekend as it picked up home wins against Sonoma State and San Francisco. The California Collegiate Athletic Association victories gave the Jacks a foothold in the top six teams in the league.
"We are on a roll," said Head Coach
Steve Kinder. "Right now we're taking care of business and we're moving in the right direction at the right time of year. I am really happy with the team playing at a higher level each time on the floor. We've got a great locker room of guys that are a tightknit group."
Kinder admits that despite the team's 10-1 home regular season record, the Jacks will have to step up their game on the road beginning this weekend.
"The two teams we are playing this weekend we significantly beat at home," explained Kinder. "Now we have to prove it again on the road. Cal State LA is playing well and certainly could have beaten Chico State (on the road) and then beat (Cal State) Stanislaus. That is a really tough trip, as we know."
HSU topped Cal State LA by 11, 85-74, and led by 32 at one point midway through the second half. Five Jacks scored 10 or more points in the win and
Rakim Brown and
Malik Morgan led the Green and Gold with 16 points apiece.
The Golden Eagles have lost three of their last five games, but are one of the CCAA's most dangerous squads. Cal State LA boasts the conference's top 3-point shooting percentage (38.3 percent). In their last meeting with the Jacks, the Golden Eagles were 9-for-21 from outside the arc and LaBradford Franklin scored a team-best 18 points.
"Cal State LA is very effective from the 3-point line," said Kinder. "We have to run them off the arc and be able to defend the perimeter. We'll stick with our game plan and play the way we play – fast paced. We need to be ready to go and play them tough defensively."
As the regular season winds down, each game becomes more important for the Green and Gold. The Jacks have aimed to split road series throughout the season and handle their foes in Lumberjack Arena. HSU is 3-5 on the road this season.
"(If) we split on the road on the next two road trips and we continue to sweep at home, we will be 20-8 and have a 20-win season going into the playoffs," said Kinder. "But our goal is to go one game at a time, one weekend at a time and a sweep is our goal and I think it's a realistic goal."
