ARCATA, Calif. – The Humboldt State women's soccer team (2-2-0) evened its record after consecutive home victories. The Lumberjacks knocked off Dixie State (1-1-0) in overtime Thursday afternoon courtesy of
Bridget Daley's game winning goal.
"Great teams find ways to win when they don't play well, and today we were a great team," said Head Coach
Paul Karver The Lumberjacks, fresh off defeating nationally ranked Western Washington the day prior, needed to return to the home pitch and hide any fatigue after the quick turnaround.
Despite a scoreless game through 90 minutes, the Jacks outshot Dixie State in both halves, and 17-10 overall. It only took one shot in overtime for HSU to determine the outcome.
After the Red Storm opened the extra period on the offensive, the Green and Gold regrouped and build up pressure in the attack. The Jacks earned a corner kick and crowded the box.
The ball came to freshman
Bridget Daley's foot after a scramble in the middle and the freshman scored her team-high third goal of the young season. HSU's reserves celebrated the game-winning shot by running from the bench to the six-yard box to embrace their teammate.
"It was a big twenty-four hours for us and our program and the direction that we are really going now," said Karver. "To go from 0-2, to 2-2, with one night's rest is a special thing, and it takes special kids. We are lucky to have those kind of kids."
Maintaining a perfect home record will be put on hold as the Jacks travel to Holy Names this weekend before opening conference play on the road. Saturday's matchup with Holy Names is set to begin at 2:30 p.m. HSU will return to College Creek Field to close out the month with a pair of CCAA games on Sept. 23 and 25.
