HAYWARD, Calif. – With just under two and a half minutes to play in double overtime, the Humboldt State women's soccer team (3-2-0) scored the game's only goal and walked off the field victorious. Sunday afternoon's win is the third of the week for HSU and was Holy Names' (2-1-0) first loss of the season.
"Holy Names deserves a great deal of credit, they were fantastic and forced us to the edge a number of times," said Head Coach
Paul Karver. "This afternoon was another gritty performance from these ladies. Three games in five days is never easy, and to come away with all three wins is special."
In the waning minutes of double overtime, Humboldt State earned a free kick. Senior
Jillian Andersen took the set piece and played the ball into the box where freshman
Alex Jenkins secured the win with her second goal of the year.
The Lumberjacks, led in goal by senior
Caitlin Plese, earned consecutive shutouts for the first time since the 2009 season. Coincidentally, the second shutout of that season's streak was also a double overtime, 1-0, road win.
Plese, the conference saves leader, made five saves for the Green and Gold, half the number that Holy Names' keeper Miyashi Tiana was forced to make. The Jacks' offensive attack put heavy pressure on the Hawks, outshooting the home side 20-10.
"This week show how special they are and how much they believe in each other," added Karver.
The Jacks will look to continue this hot stretch as the team opens California Collegiate Athletic Association play. Humboldt travels to Southern California to face Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday, Sept. 18, and Cal State Los Angeles two days later on Sunday, Sept. 20.
