CARSON, Calif. – For the second consecutive season, and the third time in program history, the Humboldt State women's soccer team won its opening California Collegiate Athletic Association match. The Lumberjacks (4-2-0, 1-0-0) avenged last season's loss and defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills, 2-1, on its home turf.
"Tonight was a wake up call for us," said Head Coach
Paul Karver. "Dominguez Hills was fantastic, and it took everything we had to get a result this evening."
HSU came out of the gates quickly, scoring in the first eight minutes of the game. The Jacks when on the counter and through a series of crisp passes,
Madison Barnett was able to find
Courtney Rebata for her first of the year.
The lead was short-lived, however, as Dominguez Hills was able to find the back of the net in the 19
th minute of play. The finish by Naomi Willey was set up off a set piece and assisted by Kendra Serrano.
Rebata's night was far from over. The senior again made the Toros pay in the opening minutes of the second half. Rebata equaled her season scoring total from a season ago with a header strike off the foot of
Alex Jenkins at the 48:41 mark. The lead was sufficient and remained to give the Jacks a fourth-straight victory.
Defensively, goalkeeper
Caitlin Plese, the conference's leader in saves, recorded nine saves on 32 Toros shots. On the flip side, Humboldt was able to convert on two of its 13 shots, only five of which were on goal.
"The CCAA is a different animal," said Karver. "Our girls responded to it in the second half."
The Lumberjacks will look to continue their win streak on Sunday at Cal State Los Angeles. The game is set to kick off at 11:30 a.m.
