Women’s Soccer Stuns Preseason Conference Favorite Cal State LA, 1-0

LOS ANGELES – The Humboldt State women's soccer team has started California Collegiate Athletic Association play with two wins for the first time since becoming a member in 2006. The Lumberjacks (5-2-0, 2-0-0) knocked off Cal State Los Angeles, 1-0, with Samantha Morris' goal in the 74th minute.

"Cal State LA is a fantastic team and made things very hard for us today," said Head Coach Paul Karver. "Sunday games take a little something extra, and it was great that Sammie (Morris) did that for us."

The Golden Eagles (0-4-2, 0-1-1) outshot the Jacks, 17-3, in the match, but it took just one moment from Morris to change the outcome of the game. HSU capitalized on a turnover and, like many goals this year, started a counter-attack. Freshman Jacquelyn Dompier played the ball to Morris in front of the net and the Manteca, Calif., product put away the third of her career.

Senior goalkeeper Caitlin Plese was again a force in net. The transfer added eight more saves to her conference lead and lowered her season goals against average to 0.94. This is her third shutout of the season and first in conference.

"Never once did our girls not believe we would win this game. You could see it in their eyes," said Karver. "It takes belief, selflessness, and heart to win games in this conference.

This is the first time since the 2003 season that Humboldt has swept the two Los Angeles area schools. Entering this weekend, the Jacks were a combined 2-19-3 against Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State Los Angeles, with the only two wins coming in that 2003 season.

CCAA competition continues this week with a pair of games at College Creek Field. Sonoma State, another team who has yet to lose in conference after going 1-0-1 in the first weekend of competition, will be in Arcata on Wednesday. Chico State will face the Jacks on Friday in its first CCAA game of the season. Both matches will start at 12:30 p.m.
