ARCATA, Calif. – The Humboldt State women's soccer team's five-game winning streak was snapped in double overtime of its conference home opener. Sonoma State (4-1-2,2-0-1) scored on a penalty kick in the 106
th minute to knock off the Lumberjacks (5-3-0,2-1-0) Wednesday afternoon.
"We wanted to absorb their pressure and come out with a draw to continue our momentum," said Head Coach
Paul Karver. "The numbers show a lot of shots, but the majority of them were from 30-35 yards out. That is fine for our defense to allow those from distance."
The Jacks stuck to their game plan and didn't allow the disparity in shots to rattle them. The Seawolves outshot the Jacks 36-2 with 18 shots on frame for goalkeeper
Caitlin Plese to deal with. The senior transfer recorded a career-high 16 saves on the day.
The first shot that went in for SSU came just before the halftime intermission. In the 43
rd minute, Cecilia Sifuentes collected a loose ball just outside the top of the box and fired in a ball that dropped just between the cross bar and the outstretched arm of Plese.
Following intermission, the Jacks showed the resiliency that has been a central part of the team's first two wins against California Collegiate Athletic Association opposition. Just after the break, the answer came in the form of a strike off
Alex Jenkins' foot. The freshman collected a pass from
Courtney Rebata and put a ball on frame from outside the box. The goalkeeper could not handle the oncoming assault, and the ball leaked past her into the back of the net, tying the score.
Neither team was able to settle things in regulation, resulting in extra time. The first 10-minute session again had SSU outshooting HSU, but no goals were scored. The second overtime period appeared as if it were going to have the same storyline, ending the game in a draw. That all changed in the 106
th minute when Sonoma State played a dangerous ball into the box. The experienced keeper, Plese, jumped into a crowded area in her six-yard box to claim the ball. As she was making the play, contact in the area forced the center referee to blow his whistle and award a penalty kick to the Seawolves. Melissa Lafranchi stepped up and calmly finished the PK, ending the game.
"Rivalries are always sweet, and we have another one of Friday," said Karver. "Chico hasn't played since Saturday, so we will see how their fresh legs and our heavy legs will match up."
The Jacks will have little time to dwell on the outcome as Chico State comes to College Creek Field on Friday afternoon for a match. This will be Chico State's first CCAA game of the season and an opportunity for Humboldt to return to the winner's column.
