Second Half Goals Determine Outcome For Women’s Soccer

ARCATA, Calif. – In a 25-minute span in the second half of Friday's Humboldt State women's soccer game against Chico State, five goals were scored amongst the two teams. The frenzy of finishes did not end in the Lumberjacks (5-4-0, 2-2-0) favor, as Chico State (5-1-1, 1-0-0) defeated the hosts, 3-2.

"We had our chances to win today, but couldn't see it through," said Head Coach Paul Karver.

The two California Collegiate Athletic Association schools played a scoreless first half with the shot differential much closer for the Jacks than in previous matches. Chico State outshot HSU 5-4 in the first half and 14-12 in the game.

Humboldt opened the game's scoring in the 51st minute when freshman Madison Barnett found herself with space facing towards goal. The defender saw her opportunity and soared a shot on frame, dropping the ball in past the keeper. The goal was the first of Barnett's career and gave the Jacks the lead for the next 11 minutes.

In a 52-second span, the All-CCAA honorable mention selection from a year ago, Pooja Pattel, scored twice for the Wildcats. The sophomore had a pair of clever finishes inside the box to shift the momentum of the game and give Chico State the lead in the 63rd minute.

Chico State added a third goal in the 75th minute of play when Carlie Reader crossed in a ball that was met with the head of Brianna Bengivengo, who redirected it into the back of the net.

The two-goal advantage held for less than a minute, however, as HSU found an answer. The Jacks put numbers into the penalty box and were able to draw a foul just 28 seconds after allowing the goal. The result of the play was a penalty kick and freshman Bridget Daley calmly put it away to cut the deficit in half, and score her team-high fourth goal of the season.

Despite a late push, the Green and Gold were unable to put a third goal away and fell to Wildcats, 3-2, to even its CCAA record at 2-2.

"We continue to score and that gives a great deal of hope going forward," said Karver. "We've had a great stretch of games and now it will be nice to have a few days off before preparing to go on the road again,"

Humboldt State will have a full week to regroup and recover before seeing the pitch again. The Jacks open October at CSU Monterey Bay and at San Francisco State for a pair of road conference matches. The week gap between games is the longest the team has had since the season began.
