Volleyball Set for Homestand As Calendars Shifts to October

ARCATA, Calif. – The Humboldt State volleyball team has logged heavy travel miles throughout the first month of the season. The Lumberjacks (5-5, 3-3) hold an even record on the season, despite playing nine of ten matches away from Lumberjack Arena.

HSU will host UC San Diego (Oct. 1), Cal State Bernardino (Oct. 3), and Sonoma State (Oct. 6) on this homestand, with each match beginning at 7 p.m. The October schedule keeps the Jacks in Arcata for a total of seven matches over the course of the month, beginning with three straight.

"San Bernardino and San Diego are very good, they are tied for first right now," said Head Coach Kelly Wood. "They're both experienced, they have veterans on the team, and it is hard to find a weakness in their lineups."

Both UC San Diego and Cal State San Bernardino have started the California Collegiate Athletic Association season at 4-1, which is tied for the conference's best record. The Tritons lead the CCAA with 14.06 kills per set and average a conference-best 17.4 points per set. The Coyotes are second in points per set with 17.3, just behind UCSD, and they are the conference leaders with 127 total blocks.

San Bernardino is 11-2 and will be traveling to Humboldt following a Friday night match in Sonoma.

Humboldt State is right in the middle of the conference with a .500 overall record, and is one of three schools with an even CCAA record this season. In conference matches, HSU leads the CCAA with 330 kills, 306 assists, and 424 digs.

Senior Kaitlyn Dunaway is second in the conference with 0.38 services aces per set after recording seven last week. Fellow senior Haley Biles is fourth in the conference with 4.88 digs per set, and tallied 60 last week.

"We had a Sunday and Monday off this week for the first time since August," said Wood. "I think this homestand is overdue. The girls are looking forward to playing three matches in a row in Lumberjack Arena."
