ARCATA, Calif. – Humboldt State men's basketball returned to the hardwood Tuesday night and delivered a convincing 121-56 win over visiting Future College in its exhibition opener.
"We learned tonight that we have 12 players that can contribute," said Head Coach
Steve Kinder. "We aren't a tall team, but we play big. All of our guys are athletic and they are extremely skilled."
Both team's looked sluggish through the first 10 minutes of action, but the HSU bench provided an offensive explosion midway through the half that gave the Green and Gold a 54-28 halftime advantage.
The Lumberjacks bench contributed 40 first half points and
Colin Caslick led the way with 14 on 5-for-5 shooting. Caslick was responsible for four of HSU's nine 3-pointers before intermission. He finished the game with 16 points.
After shooting 47.4 percent from outside the arc in the first half, HSU's sharpshooters continued to heat up from long distance in the final 20 minutes. The Jacks sank 11 3-pointers and shot 68.8 percent from outside the arc in the second half.
Jeryn Lucas led HSU with 25 points on 9-of-10 shooting in his Green and Gold debut. The freshman from Sacramento, Calif., sank a pair of first half treys and knocked down five more after the break.
HSU's bench outscored the Future College reserves 77-10.
Calvin Young II returned to action following a knee injury that kept him off the court last season. Young shook off the rust and looked like his old self with 12 points, seven rebounds, a block and some above the rim highlight reel dunks.
"It was great to see Calvin Young out there playing with the combination of guys we put out there tonight," said Kinder. "I think they shared the ball extremely well."
HSU wraps its exhibition season with a home game against Bristol on Monday, Nov. 7. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
