Women’s Soccer Falters in Weekend Capper Versus Stanislaus

ARCATA, Calif. – Humboldt State's women's soccer team had a rough go of it Sunday afternoon at College Creek Field, falling to the visiting Stanislaus State Warriors by the final of 2-0.

Alex Jenkins had four shots for the home team, one on goal, and Lindsay Stoner had two shots with one on goal. HSU did manage seven shots in the first half, but couldn't convert.

"It was a good learning experience for the girls, coming off that emotional high, obviously, from beating Chico on Friday [2-1]," said Head Coach Paul Karver. "To learn how to manage that next game. How do you turn the page and be successful on Sunday? I thought we were up for the game at first and when a couple things didn't fall our way, we missed a couple open opportunities very early on when it could've been two, three-nil us in the first twenty minutes. That just seemed to take the air out of our tires and wind out of our sails, and that's when the game became difficult for us; we have to find ways to believe we're still going to get the job done when things don't fall our way early."

Stanislaus managed its first tally at 29:39 of the first half as Julia Cummings struck off an assist from Hannah Lewandowski. In the second at 50:53, Shawna McLaughlin had a strong finish from distance off a feed from Gabriela Vargas.

Karver said his message to the girls after the match was one reflecting on the level of focus and attention to detail paid to Friday's victory, as evidenced by the team's two set-piece goals, and needing to carry that forward.

"It's always important to be looking at the situation as a loss, and that's unfortunate," said Karver, "It hurts, and it's not fun. But it's only that if you allow it to be that; for us, it's always going to be a learning experience. The girls learned a big lesson today and hopefully we don't have too many more lessons we have to learn along the way."

Karver added that the desire to win is never a question for his group, but the result Sunday was a function of failure to desire to prepare properly.

The Jacks record now stands at 5-4-1, 1-3-1 in conference, and they next turn their attention to a pair of CCAA matchups next weekend, Friday at Cal Poly Pomona at 12:30 p.m. and Sunday at Cal State Bernardino at 2 p.m.
