HAYWARD, Calif. – Humboldt State women's soccer saw its season-opening, three-game winning streak end with a 2-1 loss in Friday's conference opener at Cal State East Bay.
East Bay's Abby Buitrago got the home team on the board first with a goal at the 29:00 mark, and
Alex Jenkins countered for the visitors with her fourth goal of this young season at 34:22, assisted by
Jacquelyn Dompier. East Bay had the deciding goal late, however, as Buitrago struck again at 71:26. The Jacks had a last chance opportunity with
Madison Barnett's shot at 89:31 hitting the post, but ultimately they were unable to gain the victory.
"The reality is that there wasn't a whole lot of flow to the game at all," said HSU Head Coach
Paul Karver. "We really struggled to get ahold of the game at the start. We didn't connect passes well, we didn't execute the game plan very well, and we allowed a team to score goals that they shouldn't have been allowed to score. We really struggled to get a rhythm in the game."
On a positive note, Karver pointed to the way Dompier played a nice ball into Jenkins, and he thought the team showed some fight at the end of the contest as well.
Karver also mentioned his squad's youth and said the coaches have to take responsibility for the team's readiness for future contests: "We have to prepare them during the week to come to difficult opponents and be successful and this week, as a staff, we didn't do a very good job of that obviously."
Jenkins had three shots in the game, with all of them being on goal. However, the Pioneers outshot the Jacks 8-7.
