HSU Women's Soccer Battles Hard, Falls to Stanislaus State

TURLOCK, Calif. – Despite jumping out to a   advantage the Humboldt State women's soccer team dropped the match 3-2 to Stanislaus State Friday night inside Warrior Stadium.

The first half was a defensive battle with Stanislaus taking four shots and the Lumberjacks (4-8-1, 2-7 CCAA) registering three and putting one on goal. HSU played multiple balls into the box but failed to turn any into scoring chances as the Warriors' defense was quick on their clearances.

HSU was the first team on the scoreboard with a goal from forward Mia Ontiveros who scored her first of the season at the 63:18 mark. A loose ball led to a free-for-all in the box with Ontiveros winning the contest six yards out as she turned and fired the ball into the left corner. Three and a half minutes later, the Jacks added another goal as Rose Harman sent a ball into the box and found Pikake Hix. Hix bounced off her defender with a nifty spin move and sent a rifle into the back of the net from 18 yards out.

In the 68th minute, the Warriors ended their scoring drought as Sadie Ortiz crossed the ball to Ilena Rivera who possessed the ball in stride and buried it into the back of the net. Stanislaus tied the match five minutes later as Micaela Brewer broke away from the HSU defenders and won the one-on-one matchup with the keeper. At the end of regulation, the match was tied 2-2. One minute into overtime it was Stanislaus who scored the golden goal as Summer England controlled the cross from Jenna Zuniga at the 18-yard mark and sent the game-winner past the keeper.

"Tonight we played well for a long stretch but up 2-0 we couldn't get comfortable on the ball and it ended up costing us," said Head Coach Paul Karver. "They did a very good job all night of making it hard for us to play and do the things we wanted to do. This one will sting for a while, but the opportunity to learn and grow in this environment is fantastic; a very hard lesson learned this evening."

HSU will travel to Chico State on Sunday as it faces the Wildcats at 2 p.m. in University Soccer Stadium.
