Women's Soccer Earns Win Versus UC Santa Cruz

ARCATA, Calif. -- Humboldt State women's soccer scored all three of its goals in the first half as it cruised to a 3-0 non-conference win over visiting UC Santa Cruz Saturday afternoon.

"It was important to get a win today so we can build momentum into next week," said Head Coach Paul Karver. "Everybody that entered the game found a way to contribute positively."

The Lumberjacks (5-9-1) came out with tremendous energy and scored the first goal four and half minutes into the match. Alex Jenkins took a shot on goal that was saved by the Santa Cruz keeper Allie Mandel. The ball bounced off Mandel and fell to the foot of Jacquelyn Dompier who possessed the rebound and sent the ball into the wide open net, giving HSU the 1-0 lead. In the 18th minute Dompier dribbled the ball from the left corner, past defenders and into the box before crossing it to Jenkins who turned and fired the ball towards the net. The keeper was able to get a hand on it, but it wasn't enough to keep the ball out of the goal. At the 14:39 mark, Rose Harman sent a beautiful cross from the right side of the field that cleared the Banana Slug defenders and found Dompier waiting at the far post as she tapped in her second goal on the day.

"I think what went really well today was that we were able to take a breath," said Dompier. "Playing well all season, some of the best soccer I've seen us play, with no result is hard. Being able to be creative, press hard, and enjoy the game again made a huge difference, especially in the attacking third. I'm looking forward to two more games next weekend and to getting the details right for our last weekend."

HSU managed seven more shots in the second half but was unable to find the back of the net. Senior Goalkeeper Nora Goodrie started the match and recorded four saves on nine shots faced. Junior keeper Katelin Talbert started the second half, but thanks to the Lumberjacks defense, the Banana Slugs failed to record a single shot.

The Green and Gold will look to maintain their momentum next week as they host Cal State Monterey Bay Thursday, Oct. 25 at 12:30 p.m. at College Creek Field.
