ARCATA, Calif. – The Humboldt State women's soccer team captured its sixth win of the year as it defeated Cal State Monterey Bay 2-0 Thursday afternoon at College Creek Field.
At the 34:41 mark the Lumberjacks (6-9-1, 3-8 CCAA) scored the match's first goal off a brilliant set piece taken by Sabine Postma. The sophomore midfielder drew the foul a yard outside the box and then fired the free kick right of the wall as she finished in the bottom right corner.
In the 63rd minute, Postma stole the ball from the Otter defenders inside Monterey's box and centered the ball to Alex Jenkins who drilled the ball into the left side of the net giving the Jacks a 2-0 lead. Jenkins' goal moves her to third all-time in program history with 24 career goals.
"Today was a big win and the girls showed a great deal of grit to make it happen," said Head Coach
Paul Karver. "Monterey challenged us by adding numbers in the midfield and there were moments that they were very good in transition, but the whole team did a very good job of keeping the ball out of the goal. In a game that wasn't always pretty we had a number of very quality runs of play that resulted in the goals. We will take this momentum into Saturday's Senior Day game and hope to get another win against a very good East Bay Team."
Sophomore goalkeeper Brooke Townsend won her second game of the season and recorded her first career shutout.
HSU will look to end its season on a three-game winning streak as the Green and Gold host Cal State East Bay Saturday, Oct. 27. The Senior Day game is scheduled to kick off at 11:30 a.m.
