Late Goals Lift Women’s Soccer to Comeback Victory

ARCATA, Calif. – The Humboldt State women's soccer team relied on three second-half goals to defeat Cal Poly Pomona 3-1 Sunday afternoon at College Creek Field.

"The girls showed a great deal of grit and determination to come back from a goal down," said Head Coach Paul Karver. "We felt that we had good control of the game for long stretches, and Cal Poly did a very good job of blocking shots and making saves where we felt we could have been up at halftime. A true team effort and a bit of class on the set pieces made the difference today."

The first half was extremely competitive as the Lumberjacks barely outshot Pomona 7-6. HSU's best scoring chance came in the 40th minute as Rose Harman sent a shot on goal that was blocked by a sliding Bronco defender. Alex Jenkins possessed the rebound and sent it right of the open goal.

Pomona scored the first goal of the match as Ambria Pogue redirected a cross from the right side of the field from Jillian Erwin at the 54:39 mark. The Broncos lead was short-lived as Alex Jenkins tied the game four minutes later. The senior forward sent a shot on goal that was deflected off the keeper and bounced back to the foot of Jenkins who fired a second shot that hit the post. Finally, on the third attempt, the Loomis, Calif., native buried the ball in the back of the net tying the match 1-1.

The Lumberjacks never looked back and controlled the pace of play for the remainder of the game. HSU added to its lead in the 84th minute as Sabine Postma took a free kick just outside of the box that she curved over the wall into the top left corner. Two minutes later, Pikake Hix outjumped the defenders in the box and headed the ball into the bottom right side of the net following a corner kick from Postma to make the score 3-1.

"I feel that our high-pressure mindset helped create a lot of positive energy and led to us taking control of the game for the majority of the first and second half," said Jenkins. "Having the home game with so many friends and family out to support was a huge motivator for a lot of us, and once we got on the scoreboard the energy and work rate was fantastic. We plan on taking the rest of the season one game at a time and continue to fix the details that may have been missing in previous matches. There's always work to be done, and we plan on making the most of it. Overall we are very happy with the result today and our ability to take advantage of the opportunities that we had in front of goal."

Jenkins is now tied as the conference's leader in goals scored, as she has recorded eight so far on the season.

"We played with heart and stuck with the game plan even after letting in a goal which led to some quality team goals," said Postma. "We played strong defensively as a unit and it allowed us to keep the ball and play the type of possession soccer that we love.

The Lumberjacks will hit the road as they travel to Turlock, Calif., for a match with Stanislaus State Friday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m.
