Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Andrew Goetz

Women’s Soccer Suffers Season-Opening Loss to Cavaliers

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – No. 19 Concordia (Ore.) scored a goal within the first minute and never looked back as it dealt the Humboldt State women's soccer team a 2-0 loss in its season opener.

"Today was a difficult test against a very good team," said HSU Head Coach Paul Karver. "The reality is that we opened the match very poorly, giving up an uncharacteristic goal in the first minute. The response from the girls was fantastic as we had a very good run of play for the rest of the game with the better chances. We have to do a better job with our ability to finish in front of goal."

Concordia's Sydney Vansteenberge posted the game's first goal 57 seconds into the match. HSU answered with four shots on goal the following 13 minutes, but the North Coast squad was unable to find the equalizer. The Jacks finished the half with just four shots.

A halftime break gave the Jacks a boost. Alex Jenkins almost scored less than six minutes into the half, but her shot hit the post. Thirty-nine seconds later Jenkins fired another shot on goal and it was stopped by Concordia goalkeeper Hailey Asato.

Brenda Uribe buried a penalty kick with three minutes remaining to put the match out of reach.

"Not the result we wanted, but there were a lot of good things that we'll be able to take away from this game to build moving forward," said HSU senior Madison Barnett.

The Cavaliers outshot the Jacks 9-8, and Jenkins finished with a team-high four shots for the Green and Gold.

HSU will face Dominican Saturday at 2 p.m. in Seawolf Stadium.
