Jenkins Notches Game-Winning Goal Versus Dominican

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The Humboldt State women's soccer team bounced back from its opening day loss and shut out the Penguins of Dominican University 1-0 Saturday afternoon.

"Today was a great response against a good Dominican team," said HSU Head Coach Paul Karver. "We made some adjustments to our shape that allowed us to attack a bit more and that is what finally opened the game for us. I'm really happy with these girls and excited to take the next steps in the process."

HSU was limited to just two shot attempts in the first half, but the Lumberjacks (1-1) took advantage of their limited scoring chances. At the 38:43 mark, senior forward Alex Jenkins raced passed defenders as the keeper came out of the box to meet her. Jenkins won the one-on-one matchup and chipped the ball over the diving goalie to give the Jacks the 1-0 lead.

"I thought it was a really great step in the right direction," said senior defender and team captain Jensen Smith. "We have worked so hard, so to get a win on the road is always key for us to keep pushing. I'm very excited to see where this team goes!"

HSU's defense stood strong and allowed only two Dominican shots on goal the entire match.

The North Coast squad heads to Grand Junction, Colo., next Friday to take on Western State (Colo.) at 4:30 p.m. at Walker Field.
