Jenkins’ Goal Lifts Women’s Soccer to CCAA Win

LOS ANGELES – The Humboldt State women's soccer team defeated Cal State Los Angeles 1-0 in a defensive battle as the Jacks earned their first win in California Collegiate Athletic Association play.

Senior forward Alex Jenkins scored the first and only goal of the match off an assist from sophomore midfielder Sabine Postma at the 30:15 mark. Jenkins split two defenders as she chased down the clearance from Postma and fired the ball to the far post across the keeper's face.

"This evening the girls were fantastic with their commitment to the game plan," said Head Coach Paul Karver. "We told them if they could dominate possession with anything close to 600 passes that nobody would be able to keep up with us. We had a few stretches where the game could of gone either way, but our girls gritted it out when they needed to. I couldn't be more proud of the grit we showed."

Both squads produced three corner kicks apiece but it was the Lumberjacks out-shooting LA with five shots on goal to one. Senior goalkeeper Nora Goodrie earned her second shutout of the season as she helped the Green and Gold improve to 3-3-1 on the year.

"It was a great turnout on the road," said Jenkins. "I'm so proud of everyone for putting in the hard work that it takes to not only shut out a good team on the road but to come out with the result as well. I think we all understood the intensity required to compete with an athletic team like CSULA"

CSULA goalkeeper Adriana Maldonado entered the game as one of the conference's best, recording three shutouts and 30 saves. Humboldt's offense was able to best the senior as the Golden Eagles surrendered their fourth goal of the season.

This is the third time in program history HSU has beaten the Golden Eagles.

The Jacks will look to build off their success as they face Cal State Dominguez Hills Sunday at 2 p.m. in Carson, Calif.
