Women’s Soccer Surrenders A Pair of Late Goals in Loss

LA JOLLA, Calif. – Cal State San Marcos scored a pair of goals in the last 15 minutes as they held on to defeat the HSU women's soccer team 2-0 Friday afternoon at The Cage.

The Lumberjacks had plenty of scoring opportunities with 13 shots, with nine of those chances on goal, but none of them found their home at the back of the net as the Cougars goalkeeper Yesenia Betancourt completed her third shutout of the season.

"Today was frustrating because we should have been up two to three goals at half, but we didn't take our chances well enough," said Head Coach Paul Karver. "They did a good job of pressing us in the second half, but they were only dangerous in the two moments that decided the game. If you don't put teams away in this conference strange things will happen, especially on the road, and that is the story of our year at this point."

San Marcos midfielder Danielle Wiens broke up the scoreless game as she tracked down a bouncing ball in the box and headed it into the bottom right corner at the 75:05 mark. The Cougars sealed their victory as defender Alyssa Pigoni drilled a ball from 25 yards out for her first goal of the season.

Sabine Postma had four shots for HSU, two on goal, while Alex Jenkins had two shots and put both on goal.

HSU drops to 3-5-1 overall and 1-4 in conference play. The Green and Gold face the nation's top-ranked team in UC San Diego on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. at Triton Stadium.
