LaJOLLA, Calif--- The No. 2 UC San Diego Tritons defeated the visiting Humboldt State Lumberjacks 5-2 this evening at Triton Soccer Field in a CCAA match-up in La Jolla, Calif. The connection of
Selena Osorio and
Kelsey Bess connected for both of HSU's two goals.
QUOTES FROM THE COACH: "The girls deserve a great deal of credit for how we played this evening and the score is not indicative of how the game truly was played," said Humboldt State head women's soccer coach
Paul Karver. They are a fantastic team with quality and depth in every position. We were able to tactically do a few things that made them uncomfortable. We scored two very good goals and nearly doubled their total goals against for the year. We made them work for it but in the end they were clinical in front of goal and that was the difference."
FIRST HALF: The nationally ranked UC San Diego Tritons took a 1-0 lead in the tenth minute when Kameryn Hoban connected on a ball from Michelle Baddour and Maddy Samilo. Five minutes later,
Selena Osorio connected on her first goal of the season on a ball from
Kelsey Bess to tie the match at 1-1 for Humboldt State. Osorio had a chance to take the lead, but Osorio's shot was stopped by Angelica Ramos in the 20
th minute. UC San Diego (9-0-1, 4-0-1 CCAA) had a chance to take the lead in the 35
th minute when
Katelin Talbert stopped Lucy Tang's shot. The Tritons took the 2-1 lead in the 37
th minute on an unassisted goal by Natalie Saddic.
SECOND HALF: Talbert had another save in the 59
th minute when she stopped Samilo's shot on goal attempt. The Tritons doubled their lead on a goal by Mika Celeste off a ball from Emily Kileen in the 66
th minute. The hosts increased their lead to 4-1 on a penalty kick by Saddic in the 81
st minute. Humboldt State (1-6-2, 0-4 CCAA) cut the deficit to 4-2 on a goal by Bess off a ball from Osorio. Marissa Ray increased the lead for UC San Diego back to three (5-2) when she connected on a ball from Kate Hottinger with seven minutes left in the match.
