Spencer’s Golden Goal Lifts HSU to 1-0 Victory

ARCATA, Calif.---  Kendal Spencer connected on a ball from Kelsey Bess in the 92nd minute of the overtime as Humboldt State defeated the visiting Cal State Monterey Bay Otters (7-4-1, 2-4 CCAA) 1-0 this afternoon at College Creek Field.  This was Spencer's first goal of the season while Katelin Talbert recorded three saves en route to her third shutout of the season.

QUOTES FROM THE COACH: "I couldn't be prouder of this group today," said head coach Paul Karver.  "We talk about responding to adversity and that is exactly what they did today.  Friday's results were hard and we could have easy hung our heads but instead the girls put their hearts on the line and came out fighting.  We know we need points and getting three today was big before we head to SoCal."

FIRST HALF:  Katelin Talbert made the first of her three saves on the day in the fourth minute when she stopped Sahana Bojorquez's shot on goal attempt for the Lumberjacks.  Eight minutes later, HSU had a chance to take the lead when Kelsey Bess' shot was stopped by the Otters' Alysaon Schade.  The Lumberjacks had another chance at the lead when Schade stopped Sabine Postma's shot in the 28th minute.  Humboldt State had two more chances late in the half when Valerie Perez's shot sailed wide and Lindsay Stoner's shot was stopped by Schade to send the match scoreless into the half.

SECOND HALF:  Humboldt State (4-7-2, 2-5 CCAA) had a chance to take the lead when Erin Siegel's shot went high over the net.  Siegel had another chance when Schade stopped her attempt in the 72nd minute.  With four minutes left in regulation, Pikake Hix's shot was blocked by the Otter defense to send the match into overtime.

OVERTIME:  The Otters had the first chance for the golden goal just seconds into the extra period, when Jasmine Safarians' shot went wide of the goal.  One minute later, Kendal Spencer connected on the golden goal off a cross from Bess.

GOALIES:  Katelin Talbert had three saves in goal for HSU while Alyson Schade had seven in goal for CSUMB.

UP NEXT:  Humboldt State will return to the road for a pair of games in Southern California on October 25 and 27.  The Lumberjacks will be in Pomona, Calif., for a 12:30pm match with Cal Poly Pomona on October 25.  A week from today, HSU will be in San Bernardino for a 11:30am match with Cal State San Bernardino.
