ARCATA, Calif..--- Humboldt State's men's basketball team will finish off its season long five-game home stand this Saturday, November 30 for a 5pm non-conference game with Portland Bible College at Lumberjack Arena. The Lumberjacks are 4-2 overall after splitting its CCAA openers this past weekend at home. HSU lost to Sonoma State 86-73 on Thursday evening and came back to defeat Cal State L.A. 93-81 this past Saturday.
RECAP OF THE WEEKEND: Humboldt State went 1-1 this past weekend in the opening weekend of CCAA play. The Lumberjack started the weekend with an 86-73 loss to Sonoma State despite having four players score in double digits in
Rob Lewis (23 points),
Isaiah Pope (17 points),
Amari Green (12 points) and
Zachariah Christian (11 points). HSU forced 17 turnovers by the Seawolves including eight by steals (three by
Jackson Strong). Humboldt State finished its weekend with a 93-71 come-from-behind win over Cal State L.A. on Saturday behind Strong and Lewis each with 21 points.
Leland Green added 12 points while
Isaiah Sampson chipped in 11 points and Christian scored 10 points for the 'Jacks.
UPDATE ON THE LUMBERJACKS: Humboldt State is one of seven teams that opened its CCAA 1-1. The six other teams were Stanislaus State, Cal State East Bay, Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State San Bernardino Chico State and SF State. Two teams went 2-0 in the opening weekend in UC San Diego and Cal State Dominguez Hills. The Lumberjacks are averaging 87.2 points per game while giving up 85.8 points per game. They are out-rebounding their opponents 35.7 to 34.3. HSU is 4-2 and 1-1 in the CCAA heading into its non-conference game with Portland Bible this Saturday evening at 5pm.
LUMBERJACK LEADERS: Five player are averaging double digits in scoring for the Lumberjacks in
RaySean Scott Jr. (24.3 ppg),
Leland Green (15.7 ppg),
Rob Lewis (15.5 ppg),
Jackson Strong (13.2 ppg) and
Zachariah Christian (10.6 ppg). Scott leads Hsu with his 8.0 rebounding average and five blocked shots. Christian is shooting a team leading 60.6% from the field while Strong is shooting a team high 42.9% from three's. Strong also leads the team with his 92.3% shooting from the line.
Leland Green has a team leading 21 assists and Strong has recorded a team high seven steals.
DOUBLE-DOUBLE: Rob Lewis recorded his second double-double of the season in this past Saturday's 93-81 win over Cal State L.A. Lewis scored 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds while blocking two shots and dishing out two assists. Lewis' first double-double of the season came in HSU's 89-81 win over Fresno Pacific on Nov. 9.
15-4: Humboldt State is 15-4 at home since the beginning of the 2018-19 season. The 'Jacks are 3-1 this season with their only blemish the loss to Sonoma State this past Wednesday.
110 THREE'S: In his two-year career at Humboldt State,
Jackson Strong has made 110 three's in his career. He is 13 three's from moving past Grayson Moyer (2004-08) into tenth place on HSU's all-time career list. Ernie Spada (2008-11) holds the all-time career mark in three's with 202.
UPDATE ON THE WILDCATS: Portland Bible is 0-7 after dropping its last two games 94-47 at Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston, Idaho, on November 15 and 72-57 to Simpson in Portland this past Saturday. In their game against Lewis-Clark State, Ahmade Kempston led the Wildcats with 12 points. HSU defeated Portland Bible last season 97-39 on January 6.
UP NEXT FOR HSU: After the classic, Humboldt State will return to CCAA action as the Lumberjacks go on the road for a pair of games. The 'Jacks will be at Cal Poly Pomona on Dec. 5 at 7:30pm and at Cal State Monterey Bay on Dec. 3 at 3pm. They will return home on Dec. 12 for a 7:30pm scheduled CCAA contest against SF State in Lumberjack Arena.
