Lumberjacks To Conclude Their Three-Game Home Stand With CSUSM and No. 6 UC San Diego

ARCATA, Calif..---   The Humboldt State Lumberjacks will conclude their three-game home stand with a pair or CCAA games this weekend in Lumberjack Arena.  The Lumberjacks will entertain Cal State San Marcos on Thursday, January 9 and No. 6 UC San Diego on Saturday, January 11.  Tip-off for both games is set for 7:30pm.
 
RECAP OF HSU'S LAST GAME:  Despite three Lumberjacks scoring in double digits, Humboldt State lost 92-87 to Stanislaus State this past Saturday evening in Lumberjack Arena.  Jackson Strong tied his career high with 25 points, going six-for-15 from beyond the arc and connecting on all seven of his attempts from the charity stripe.  Leland Green added 17 points off the bench for the 'Jacks and Zachariah Christian chipped in 12 points. 
 
UPDATE ON THE LUMBERJACKS:  Humboldt State is 6-7 overall and 2-6 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) heading into this week's two games.  The Lumberjacks are in a tie for tenth place in the CCAA with San Francisco State.  They are just one game out of ninth place (Cal State San Marcos) and two games outs of seventh place (Cal State L.A. and Cal State Dominguez Hills).  UC San Diego is atop of the CCAA standings with its 7-1 record.
 
The Lumberjacks are averaging 81.4 points per game while giving up 83.7 points per game. They are out-rebounding their opponents 34.2 to 33.6 rebounds per game. 
 
Four players are averaging double digits in scoring in Rob Lewis (15.3 ppg), Leland Green (15.2 ppg), Jackson Strong (14.2 ppg) and Zachariah Christian (10.2 ppg).  Christian leads the team with his 5.6 rebounding average and 58% shooting from the field while Green has dished out a team high 44 assists.  Strong leads the 'Jacks with his 45 three's made, 42.1% shooting from three's, 92.1% shooting from the line and 14 steals.  Isaiah Sampson has blocked a team leading eight shots. 
 
BALANCED SCORING ATTACK:  In all but one of the Lumberjacks' first 13 games, Humboldt State has had at least three players score in double digits.  The only game was on December 5 at Cal Poly Pomona.  Heading into this weekend, four players are averaging double digits in scoring paced by Rob Lewis' 15.3 average.  Leland Green has a 15.2 scoring average followed by Jackson Strong's 14.2 average and Zachariah Christian's 10.2 average. 
 
HE'S BACK:  In his first game of the 2019-20 season, Deion Alston come off the bench to score nine points in 15 minutes.  He went three-for-seven from the field including going two-for-four from three-point range and a perfect one-for-one from the line.  Alston grabbed two rebounds, dished out three assists and recorded one steal.
 
MOVIN' ON UP:  Humboldt State's Jackson Strong has made 134 three-point field goals in his career as a Lumberjack.  He is currently ninth on HSU's all-time career list, just three from moving past Mark White into eighth place.  Strong is also 22nd in the nation with his 45 three's made this season and 25th with his 3.46 three-point field goals made per game average.  The senior guard also is 11th in the nation with his 92.1% free throw percentage.    
 
17-5 IN THE LUMBERJACK ARENA: The Lumberjacks 17-5 in their own arena since the beginning of the 2018-19 season.  Humboldt State is 5-2 this season with an 86-73 loss to Sonoma State (Nov. 21) and a 92-87 loss to Stanislaus State (Jan. 4). 
 
36th IN THE NATION:  As a team, the Lumberjacks are shooting 76.3% from the charity stripe which places them 36th in the nation in NCAA Division II.  Seven active players are shooting 70% of better from the line paced by Jackson Strong's 92.1% shooting followed by Isaiah Pope 85%, Leland Green's 82.8% and Amari Green's 81.5%.  Rounding out the pack is Isaiah Sampson (77.8%) and Gabrys Sadaunykas (71.4%).  Noah Viera has made his only attempt from the line this season. 
 
ASSIST/TURNOVER RATIO: As a team, Humboldt State has a +1.1 assist to turnover ratio heading into this week.  The Lumberjacks have six players that have dished out more assists than turning the ball over.  The six 'Jacks are Leland Green (44 assists, 24 turnovers), Jackson Strong (25 assists, 13 turnovers), Amari Green (22 assists, 17 turnovers), Gabrys Sadaunykas (10 assists, 5 turnovers), Bryce Jackson (three assists, one turnover) and Deion Alston (three assists, one turnover).
 
UPDATE ON THE COUGARS:  Cal State San Marcos enters its game on Thursday with the Lumberjacks with a 7-7 overall record and a 3-5 CCAA record.  The Cougars are 3-2 in their last five games including going 2-0 last weekend at home (83-56 win over Cal State East Bay and 91-79 win over Cal State Monterey Bay).
 
They are averaging 74.8 points per game while giving up 71.4 points per game.  CSUSM is out-rebounding its opponents 36.9 to 36.7.  Three players are averaging double digits in scoring in Khalil Fuller (12.8 ppg), Blake Seits (12.1 ppg) and Marcus Brown (10.6 ppg).  Fuller leads the team with his 7.9 rebounding average and 64.2% shooting from the field.  Seits has a team leading 15 steals and leads the team with his 45% shooting from three's and 37 three-point field goals made.  Jayce McCain has dished out a team leading 43 assists and recorded a team high 34 steals with Alex Gil-Fernandez blocking a team high nine shots.  Darius Goudeau leads CSUSM with his 82.4% shooting from the line.
 
Cal State San Marcos and Humboldt State have split their eight games since 2015.  The two teams split the season series last year with each winning on the other's court.  Humboldt State won 86-75 in San Marcos on Nov. 29, 2018 and Cal State San Marcos won 91-72 on Jan. 24, 2019 in Arcata.
 
UPDATE ON THE NO. 6 TRITONS:  UC San Diego is 13-1 overall and 7-1 entering its game at Stanislaus State this Thursday.  The Tritons have won five in a row since losing 81-73 at home against Chico State on Dec. 5. UC San Diego won both of its games this past weekend at home 94-72 against Cal State Monterey Bay and 75-73 against Cal State East Bay. 
 
The Tritons are averaging 84.6 points per game while giving up 67.6 points per game.  They are out-rebounding their opponents 32.8 to 30.2.  Three players are averaging double digits in scoring in Chris Hansen (19.1 ppg), Christian Oshita (17.8 ppg) and Tyrell Roberts (15.7 ppg).  Hansen also leads the team with his 95.7% shooting from the line and 7.8 rebounding average.  Mikey Powell leads the team with his 113 assists and 24 steals along with his 50% shooting from three's.  Roberts has connected on a team high 39 three's and Marek Sullivan has blocked a team high nine shots.
 
Since 2007, Humboldt State leads the all-time series with UC San Diego 13-11.  HSU snapped its five-game losing streak to the Tritons on Jan. 26, 2019, in Arcata with a 67-65 victory.  The Lumberjacks lost the first meeting last year 85-62 in La Jolla on Nov. 29, 2018.
