ARCATA, Calif..--- The fifth ranked Chico State Wildcats took two from the Humboldt State Lumberjacks 17-1 (5) and 10-5 this afternoon in a CCAA doubleheader at HSU Softball Field.
Danica Grier drove in three runs for the Lumberjacks while
Micaela Harris scored three runs for the 'Jacks.
GAME ONE: The fifth ranked Chico State Wildcats (12-1, 7-1 CCAA) took a 5-0 lead with a five-run second inning capped by a three-run double by Drew Rodriguez. The Wildcats increased their lead to 7-0 on a two-run home run by Brooke Larsen in the third inning. They took a 16-0 run lead after a nine-run fourth inning which was keyed by a Rodriguez bases-clearing double. Chico State added another run in the fifth to take a 17-0 lead. Humboldt State scored its run in the fifth inning.
Izzy Starr walked and later scored on a ground out by
Mariah Kalamaras.
GAME ONE LEADERS: Jacci Crowe had the Lumberjacks' only hit while
Izzy Starr scored their only run. Jordan Digiancinto and Reilani Peletti went a combined six-for-seven while driving in two runs and scoring four runs. Brooke Larsen recorded the win while striking out two in four innings.
Taylor Culp picked up the loss for the 'Jacks.
GAME TWO: Chico State in the top of the first inning in game two took a 1-0 lead. The Lumberjacks tied the game in their half of the first inning.
Micaela Harris had a lead-off single, stole second and scored on a
Danica Grier bunt single in the bottom of the first inning. The Wildcats took a 5-1 lead with a four-run second inning. They added an insurance run on a sacrifice fly by Karter Williams in the top of the third inning.
The score remained 6-1 until the Lumberjack fifth inning, when Humboldt State (4-11, 3-9 CCAA) scored on a Grier run scoring single which scored Harris. The Wildcats added four more runs in the seventh to take a 10-2 lead.
HSU made it interesting in its last inning. Harris walked and
Lauren Lipe reached on a fielding error. They each advanced a base on a wild pitch. Harris scored on a sacrifice fly by Grier. Lipe scored on a single by
Izzy Starr.
Anna Brondos drove in
Jenna Sobrero who pinch ran for Starr to cut the deficit to 10-5. The visitors took the 10-5 victory as they induced the last batter to ground out.
GAME TWO LEADERS: Danica Grier went two-for-two with three runs batted in while
Micaela Harris scored three runs and stole three bases.
Megan Escobar suffered the loss for the 'Jacks. Amanda Metzger went three-for-four, driving in five runs and scoring three runs for the Wildcats. Sam Mulock picked up the win in the start for the Wildcats.
UP NEXT: Humboldt State will continue its eight-game home stand with a four-game series against Sonoma State beginning with a doubleheader on Friday, February 28 starting at noon.
