SEASIDE, Calif--- After a scoreless first half, Cal State Monterey Bay (5-2-3, 2-1-1) scored two goals in the first thirty minutes of the second half to key the Otters 2-0 win over the visiting Humboldt State Lumberjacks. The 'Jacks had five shot attempts including two on goal (one by
Kendal Spencer and the other by
Baylee Groom).
QUOTES FROM THE COACH: "Our first half was much better than Friday," said head coach
Grant Landy. "We had a much better focus and intensity to what we were doing. Neither team was able to generate much offense. The second half, they raised their intensity level and we kind of flattened. That's where they took advantage of their scoring opportunities. This team continues to battle and we are learning a lot of good lessons as we build this program."
FIRST HALF : Each team's defense stepped up in the first half as each team did not record a shot attempt in the first 45 minutes to end the half in a scoreless half.
SECOND HALF:: The match remained scoreless until the 55
th minute when the Otters scored on a header by Amedlia McManus off a corner kick from Kirin Smith. The 'Jacks had a chance to tie the match in the 63
rd minute when
Sarah Paquette's shot sailed wide left of the net. Humboldt State (3-4-4, 0-2-2 CCAA) had another chance in the 65
th minute, but
Emma McChristie's shot went wide right of the goal. HSU's
Alexis Aguilar made her only save of the day in the 66
th minute when she stopped another shot on gaola attempt by McManus.
Maya Davis saw her chance to tie the match for HSU go over the top right corner of the net in the 70
th minute. CSUMB doubled its lead on a goal by Brenda Uribe on a ball from Sierra Levy in the 75
th minute. Four minutes later,
Baylee Groom had a chance to cut the deficit in half but her shot was stopped by Aubrey McKessy. The 'Jacks had another chance to cut the Otter lead in half, but
Kendal Spencer's shot on goal attempt was stopped by McKessy with five minutes left in regulation as the Otters hung on for the 2-0 win.
UP NEXT: The Lumberjacks will continue their three-match road trip this Thursday, October 14 at 4:30pm with a CCAA match against Stanislaus State in Turlock, Calif. The 'Jacks will return to College Creek Field a week from today when they host Cal State East Bay at 11:30am.
