Lumberjacks and Coyotes Play to a 1-1 Double Overtime Tie

ARCATA, Calif---  For the third straight match, the Humboldt State Lumberjacks played to a double overtime tie.  This time the ' Jacks played to a 1-1 double overtime tie with the visiting Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes.  Baylee Groom connected on a ball from Maya Davis in the 27th minute for the Lumberjacks' goal.  With seven minutes left in regulation, the Coyotes tied the match at 1-1 as Vidalia Abarca scored on a ball from Nathaly Losada Lucumi.
 
QUOTES FROM THE COACH:  "Tough one today," said head coach Grant Landy.  "We were six minutes away from an important win but hats off to Cal State San Bernardino for continuing to press and come up with the equalizer."
 
"I am so proud of this group," added Landy.  "We have a thin roster right now and the players are just playing their hearts out.  These are the building blocks for our program moving forward.  We will just keep battling and moving forward."
 
FIRST HALF: Humboldt State (3-2-4, 0-0-2 CCAA) had the first shot on goal attempt in the 12th minute when Kendal Spencer's shot was saved by the Coyotes' Kayla Ceballos.  The 'Jacks had another chance for the lead in the 14th minute when Poppy Cartledge's shot was blocked by the Coyote defense.  The visitors had a chance for the lead, but Vidalia Abarca's shot on goal attempt was stopped by the Lumerjacks' Alexis Aguilar.  Five minutes later, Aguilar made another save this time off the foot of Emelie Peraza.  With 26:16 on the clock, HSU took the 1-0 lead on a goal by Baylee Groom off a cross from Maya Davis.  HSU had two chances to double its lead in the final minutes of the half,  but Groom's shot went high and Tana Eri's was stopped by the Coyote defense as the match went into the half with HSU leading 1-0.
 
SECOND HALF: Cal State San Bernardino (2-5-1, 0-1-1 CCAA) had a chance to tie the match in the 57th minute when Aguilar stopped Abarca's shot on goal attempt.  HSU had another chance to double its lead but Spencer's shot sailed wide right of the net in the 61st minute.  With 25 minutes left in regulation, Aguilar made another stop of a shot by Peraza.  The 'Jacks looked like it was going to double their lead but Sarah Paquette's shot was blocked by the Coyote defense.  Eri had another chance to double the 'Jack lead but Ceballos stopped her attempt in the 71st minute as she did on Erin Mohr's shot on goal attempt.  With seven minutes left, the Coyotes tied the match at 1-1 on a goal by Abarca off a cross from Nathaly Losada Lucumi.  Humboldt State had a chance to take the lead back, but Groom's shot sailed wide right as the match went into overtime.
 
OVERTIME:  In the first overtime period, CSUSB recorded the only shot on goal attempt in the 97th minute when Danielle Landrum's shot was stopped by Aguilar. In the second overtime, HSU had two chances for the golden goal in the 106th and 107th minute be stopped by Ceballos.  The first one off the foot of Paquette and the second off the foot of Emma McChristie.  Aguilar made her final save of the afternoon on a shot on goal attempt by Abarca in the 109th minute as the match ended with a 1-1 tie.
 
THREE IN A ROW:  Humboldt State played their third straight double overtime tie today and fourth on the season.  To begin the season, HSU played a scoreless tie with Dominican.  On September 25, HSU tied with Chico State 1-1 and on Friday played to a scoreless tie with Cal State San Marcos. 
 
UP NEXT:  Humboldt State will begin a three-match road trip this Friday, October 8 with a 1:30pm CCAA match at Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson, Calif.  The 'Jacks will return home on Sunday, October 17 at 11:30am when they host Cal State East Bay at College Creek Field.
