CARSON, Calif--- Humboldt State women's soccer team's four-match unbeaten streak was snapped in a 2-0 loss to the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros (4-5, 1-2 CCAA) this afternoon in Carson, Calif. Patricia Rubio-Martinez connected on both of the Toros' goals while Vanessa Campos and Nia Thompson recorded the assists.
Alexis Aguilar recorded eight saves in goal for the 'Jacks.
QUOTE FROM THE COACH: "We got off to a slow start and never found out footing for long stretches in the game," said head coach
Grant Landy. "We had some good moments but we were not consistent enough with the amount of work we were willing to put in. This will be a good learning experience and I know this team will come out fighting on Sunday."
FIRST HALF: The Toros had five chances the first 14 minutes to take the early lead but the Lumberjacks'
Alexis Aguilar recorded five of her eight saves on the day. The 'Jacks looked like they were going to take the lead in the 37
th minute, but
Maya Davis' shot on goal attempt was stopped by the Toros' Alyssa Newsom. They had another chance late in the half, but Newsom stopped
Josie Wolitzky's shot on goal attempt to send the match into the second half scoreless.
SECOND HALF: The score remained scoreless until the 61
st minute when Patricia Rubio-Martinez scored her first of two goals off a ball from Vanessa Campos. HSU had a chance to tie the match at 1-1 in the 67
th minute, but Clara Lenishan's shot sailed over the top left of the net. The 'Jacks had another chance to tie the match, but Emile Wallin's shot sailed left of the net. One minute later Rubio-Martinez doubled the hosts' lead off a ball from Nia Thompson. The 'Jacks had a chance to cut into the hosts' lead late in the match, but Wallin's shot on goal attempt was stopped by Newsom.
AGUILAR: Once again,
Alexis Aguilar had eight saves in goal for the Lumberjacks (3-3-4, 0-1-2 CCAA). This ties her season hih for saves in a match.
UP NEXT: The Lumberjacks will continue their three-match road trip this Sunday, October 10 with a 2pm match at Cal State Monterey Bay. The Otters defeated Chico State 3-0 earlier this evening.
