Golden Eagles Hold Off Humboldt State in 1-0 Win

LOS ANGELES, Calif---  The visiting Humboldt State Lumberjacks had a couple of late chances in this afternoon's matches for the tying goal, but Cal State Los Angeles' defense held off the 'Jacks chances for the 1-0 Golden Eagle victory.  Melody Landphear scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 61st minute for the hosts off an pass from Irma Pinzon.  Mirasol Camarago had a season high eight saves in goal for the Lumberjacks.

QUOTES FROM THE COACH:  "We had a really good first half and tactically again we were spot on," said head coach Grant Landy.  "LA dropped a lot of players behind the ball so we struggled to create chances but our build up was excellent."

"In the second half, they stopped their pressure up a bit and capitalized on a chance on a counter," added Landy.  "We had to press forward at the end to try and get a goal but weren't able to capitalize on some corners and free kicks.  Marisol (Camargo) had an amazing and really stepped up when we needed her too.  She's such a team player and when her number was called this weekend she was ready and performed at a very high level."

FIRST HALF:  Humboldt State (4-9-4, 1-7-2 CCAA) had the match's first chance for a goal when the Golden Eagles' Olivia Spanish stopped Baylee Groom shot on goal attempt just three minutes into the match. Twelve minutes later, Clara Lenihan's shot sailed right of the goal.  Groom had another chance for a goal in the 19th minute but her shot attempt sailed high over the goal.  The Golden Eagles had a chance to take the lead, but Gisell Cruz's shot on goal attempt was stopped by Marisol Camargo in the 33rd minute.  The match went into the half scoreless.

SECOND HALF:  Cal State Los Angeles (5-9-2, 5-4-1 CCAA) looked like the Golden Eagles were going to take the lead, but Irma Pinzon's shot on goal attempt was stopped by Camargo in the 57th minute.  Three minutes later, the Golden Eagles took the 1-0 lead on Melody Landphear's goal off a pass from Irma Pinzon. Camargo made another stop, this time off the foot of Erin Schrock in the 71st minute.  The 'Jacks had a chance to tie the match at 1-1 in the 72nd minute when Claire Bareilles' shot went over the net.  Camargo made three more key saves in the 70th minute for the 'Jacks. The Humboldt State keeper made a huge save in the 79th minute on a penalty kick attempt by Melin Shelby.  HSU had its final chance to tie the match at 1-1 in the 87th minute when Sarah Paquette's shot on goal attempt was stopped by Areli Reyes.

UP NEXT: Humboldt State will conclude its regular season with a 2pm against Chico State on Thursday, November  4 in Chico. The 'Jacks tied the Wildcats 1-1 on September 25 in a non-conference match-up in Arcata.  Clara Lenihan scored the goal for HSU on a ball from Baylee Groom
