Story Links

ARCATA, Calif---  Return to Lumberjack Arena for the first time since February 27, 2020, the Humboldt State Lumberjacks rallied from a seven-point deficit with 2:39 left in the game to defeat the visiting Lincoln University Oaklanders 81-78.  Jaden Edwards scored what proved to be the game-winner off a pass from Will Johnson with seven seconds left to key HSU's victory. Edwards finished with 22 points while Thomas Melonja chipped in 12 points and Amari Green and AJ Sims each scored 10 points.

FIRST HALF: A Thomas Nelson's three off a pass from Amari Green gave the Lumberjacks a 18-6 lead just seven minutes into the game. An old-fashioned three-point play by Jaden Edwards off another pass from Green increased HSU's lead to 32-15 with seven minutes left in the half.  Lincoln finished the half outscoring the 'Jacks 25-8 to take a 40-38 lead into the locker room.

SECOND HALF:  Humboldt State tied the game at 42-42 on a jumper in the paint by Cam Timmons in the first minute.  Lincoln went on a 12-4 run in the next six minutes to take a 54-46 lead on two made throws by Isaiah Attles.  The 'Jacks followed that Oaklander run with a 12-3 run of their own to cut the deficit to 58-57 with 7:28 left in the game capped by a Cam Timmons jumper off a pass from Will Johnson.  Lincoln increased its lead to seven, 76-69, with 2:39 on a jumper by Attles.  HSU came right back and cut the Oaklanders' lead to 76-75 with 1:45 to go on a three by Amari Green off another assist from Will Johnson.  A two by Tre Finch gave Lincoln a 76-65 on its next possession, but AJ Sims' tip-in cut the 'Jack deficit to 77-76. Sims then drew a charge on Linccoln's next possession.  Humboldt State (3-0) took the lead with just seven seconds left on an Edwards' jumper off a pass from Johnson gave HSU a 79-78 lead.  The 'Jack defense forced another turnover by the Oaklanders and Amari Green was followed and connected on both free throws to increase HSU's lead to 81-78.  Lincoln's last second three fell short as the 'Jacks took the 81-78 come-from-behind victory.

POINTS OFF OF TURNOVERS;  The Lumberjacks scored 24 points off of Lincoln's 14 turnovers.  HSU had six steals on the night including two by Jaden Edwards.  HSU held Lincoln to four-of-ten shooting from the three-point land.

33-29:  Humboldt State owned the boards 33-29 with Bryce Mitchell's eight rebounds leading the way followed by Jaden Edwards with five rebounds.  Three 'Jacks each had four rebounds in Amari Green, Cam Timmons and John Riddick.

27-17:  The Lumberjacks' bench outscored the Oaklanders' bench 27-17 led by Amari Green and AJ Sims each with 10 points.

FOUR IN DOUBLE-DIGITS: Four Lumberjacks scored in double digits paced by Jaden Edwards' season high 22 points.  Thomas Melonja had a season high 12 points while Amari Green and AJ Sims each chipped in 10 points off the bench for the 'Jacks.

CARDIAC KIDS:  For the third straight game, Humboldt State rallied back from a late deficit to improve to 3-0.  This evening, the 'Jacks were down by seven with 2:39 left in the game and came back to win the game, 81-78.

UP NEXT:  Humboldt State (3-0) will continue its six-game home stand this Tuesday, November 23 at 7pm.  The 'Jacks will entertain Western Oregon on Tuesday evening in another non-conference in-region game.  The Wolves went 1-1 in the Ron Logsdon Classic this weekend including a 77-56 win over Sonoma State this evening.
