SAN RAFAEL, Calif.--- Playing in the first match since November 9, 2019, the visiting Humboldt State Lumberjacks defeated the No. 16 Dominican University Penguins 1-0 this afternoon at Kennelly Field on the campus of Dominican University in San Rafael. The HSU victory snapped Dominican's five-game winning streak. Freshman
Brooke Weese connected on the game-winner with 15-minutes left in the match off a ball from
Baylee Groom. The Lumberjacks'
Alexis Aguilar recorded five saves for her first shutout win in goal for HSU.
"I am very happy for the players to be able to compete today," head coach
Grant Landy said. "They have been working extremely hard in practice and developing a good competitive mentality. Dominican is a good team and had us under pressure for a lot of the game. We just hung there and our defense played well. We strung together some nice sequences in the second half. One led to the corner that led to the goal. Great service by Baylee (Groom) and a composed header by Brooke (Weese)."
HSU had a chance to take the lead in the 12
th minute, but
Poppy Cartledge's shot went over the top of the goal. Four minutes later, Dominican (5-1) had a chance to take the lead but Aguilar stopped Danielle Gonzalez's shot on goal attempt. Aguilar recorded another save five minutes later, this time off the foot of Tanya Bills. Cartledge had another attempt to give the visitors the lead, but this time her shot attempt sailed over the top left of the net. The junior goalkeeper stopped another Penguin attempt to give the hosts the lead with nine minutes left in the half as the teams went into the locker rooms at the half scoreless.
Two minutes into the new half, it looked like
Sarah Paquette was going to score the match's first goal but her attempt went left of the goal. The score remained scoreless until the 75:06 mark as
Brooke Weese connected on a ball from
Baylee Groom for what proved to be the game-winner.
HSU had a chance to double its lead when Jaqueline Catano stopped Julia Humphrey's shot on goal attempt with ten minutes left in regulation. The hosts had a chance to tie the match at 1-1 when Aguilar made her fifth and final save this time stopping Annika Cerini's shot on goal attempt with nine minutes left in the match.
Neither team had a shot attempt in the final nine minutes as the Lumberjacks took the 1-0 victory.
