Lumberjacks Record 19 Top Twenty Finishes in Day One of OSU High Performance Meet

Shane Oliver was one of HSU's top performers today at OSU High Performance
CORVALLIS, Ore.---  In Day One of the OSU High Performance Meet, the Humboldt State men's and women's track and field teams recorded 19 top-20 finishes in a meet that featured athletes from Division I institutions including the hosts, Oregon State University.  Leading the way were Shane Burton and Carson Smith with their second-place performances in the 1500 open and 5000 open.

Amongst the field of the OSU/High Performance meet are Oregon State University, University of Oregon, Oklahoma State University, Idaho State University, University of Hawai'i and University of San Francisco.  Some of the Division II schools participating are Humboldt State, Western Oregon and Western Washington.

Shane Burton finished second in the men's 1500 open with a time of 4:07.15 followed by Carson Cohn's sixth place time of 4:12.16.  Rounding out the Lumberjacks in the 1500 open were Jaxon LeDuc (seventh, 4:12.55), Mica Mills (12th, 4:18.95) and Alejandro Castro (13th, 4:20.92).  Carson Smith ran a 14:59.30 in the 5000 open to place second.

"Carson is still learning the 5K, but this was a savvy race," said assistant coach Jamey Harris.  "He ran it perfectly and just gave a great effort, so it was awesome that he got the result he wanted."

Over in the men's 1500-meter race, Jorge Velazquez led HSU with a 16th place finish time of 3:59.84 followed by Michael Gengo (20th, 4:00.64).  Lucy Atkinson finished in 13th place in the 1500 open for the women with a time of 5:09.15 while Rosa Granados finished in 16th place in the 5000 with a time of 17:59.07 and Saedy Williamson had a 22nd place time of 18:20.20.  "Rosa and Saedy both really followed the plan and ran smart races," added Harris.  "It was a great result for Rosa to get under 18 minutes for the first time."

"We are thrilled to be here and take advantage of this opportunity," said head coach Sarah Ingram.  "We certainly are leaving it all on the line."

Leading the way for the Lumberjacks in the 400 hurdles was Shane Oliver with his ninth-place time of 59.67.  Also today, the men's hammer took place with the Lumberjacks' Terrence Allen recording a 14th-place throw of 124-9 (38.03m).

Paul Domingue ran a personal best time of 22.68 to finish in 11th place in the men's 200-meters while Christina Roberds had a personal best time of 27.48 which placed her 31st place in the women's 200.

Over in the long jump, Grace Kasberger and Henry Hagen each finished in 13th place.  Kasberger had a jump of 16-5 (5.0m) while Hagen jumped 20-0.25 (6.39m) to lead the way for HSU's women and men in the long jump.

"Paul Domingue and Chris Roberds ran new lifetime personal best 200-meter times, and placed well ahead of where they were ranked going into the competition," noted Ingram.  "Grace Kasberger and Henry Hagen performed just shy of their lifetime bests in long jump, also placing higher than they were ranked."

Finishing off day one for HSU were the men's and women's discus throwers.  Chance Hefter had a 16th place throw of 42.05m (137-11) while Jared Del Real (39.17m, 128-06) and Kegan Richards (20th, 38.62m, 126-00 also finished in the top 20.  Over on the women's side, Rebekah Baur continued her strong week with a 19th-place throw of 34.52m (113-03).

"In big meets like this, I am happy when our younger members of the team are able to perform at or near their personal best efforts, because it shows they are keeping their focus and not getting distracted by the big meet atmosphere and the difficulties logistically at these larger meets," noted Ingram.  "Simple things that we take for granted at smaller meets like not having easy access to coaches who are stuck in 'coaches boxes' or figuring out when and where to check-in, and warmup, can often be stressful and cause wasted energy, so just learning the skills to cope with the larger meet format are important skills that can affect performance outcomes. This morning for example, there was a one-hour delay in women's long jump that was announced right as the ladies completed their warmup period. It's all part of the learning experience and I am happy to see our young team responding well to these challenges."

Day two of the OSU High Performance Meet will start at 11am tomorrow in Corvallis, Ore.  For live results/video, go to https://live.athletictiming.net/meets/8732.
