Humboldt State’s Track and Field Teams Finish Regular Season With 11 Top-15 Finishes at OSU High Performance

Grace Kasberger was one of several Lumberjacks to record personal bests this weekend
CORVALLIS, Ore.---  Humboldt State's men's and women's track and field teams finished their regular season at the final day of the OSU High Performance Meet on the campus of Oregon State University in Corvallis, Ore.  In a meet that featured predominately athletes from NCAA Division I institutions, several Lumberjacks recorded personal bests during the two-day meet including today's performance by Henry Hagen in the 110-hurdles and Grace Kasberger in the 800-meter run.

"Overall, the week was another very successful trip for our program," said head coach Sarah Ingram. "Across the board in all events, athletes achieved new personal bests time and time again.  The different meets also offered a wide range of competitive experiences and very different levels of competition, offering lots of learning experiences for our mostly young team."

Hagen had a fifth-place time of 15.28 in the 110-hurdles which was a personal best time for Hagen.  Later in the day, he finished 15th in the javelin (142-00, 47.20m).  Kasberger improved her time in the 800-meter by six seconds with her time of 2:22.83 which placed her first in her heat and 24th overall.  She also placed 21st in the high jump (4-8.75, 1.44m).

HSU had three other top 15 placers in the men's javelin with Ben Lindsey's 12th-place throw of 154-06 (47.09m) leading the way.  Terrence Allen had a 13th place throw of 151-06 (46.18m) followed by Travis Allen's throw of 150-09 (45.99m) who finished in 14th place.

Over in the shot put, Kegan Richards led HSU with his 12th-place throw of 42-8 (13.0m). Chance Hefter finished in 13th place (42-4, 12.90m) and Terrence Allen had a 15th place throw of 40-10.25 (12.45m) while Rebekah Baur finished in 18th place in the women's shot put (37-10.50, 11.54m).

Paul Domingue continued his stellar first season in the green and gold with a fourth-place finish in the triple jump (45-9.25, 13.95m) and a 12th place time of 11.09 in the 100-meter dash. Ryan Castor finished in 17th place in the 100 with a time of 11.48. In the women's 100, Cristina Roberds finished in 16th place with a time of 13.35.

Three Lumberjacks finished in the top 25 in the 100-hurdles paced by Joy Hano's 13th-place time of 15.66 followed by Roberds 20th-place time of 16.77.  Rounding out the pack was Violeta Gutierrez (23rd, 17.47) and Lilyhana Engebretsen (24th, 17.09).

Aris Valerio paced HSU in the men's 800 with a 14th-place time of 1:53.46 followed by Julian Jensen in 27th place (1:56.03).  Over in the women's 800 besides Kasberger, Lucy Atkinson had a 29th place time of 2:28.21 followed by Serena Smith in 30th place (2:32.43).

"Aris has been racing competitively in slower races, so this was a great opportunity to get a faster time and he definitely took advantage of it," said assistant coach Jamey Harris.

Over in the men's 400, Isaac Figueroa had an eight-place time of 53.79 with three HSU runners finishing in the top 25 in the women's 400.  Jade Dodley paced HSU with her 19th place time of 1:02.99 followed by Valerie Heywood (20th, 1:03.36) and Zoe Becker (21st, 1:03.73).

"Today was a successful day, again having many of our athletes out perform their rankings (based on seed times), and a ton of personal bests across all event groups," added Ingram. "I am really proud of how our team rose up to compete this year despite the many challenges they've had with COVID throughout the last year. This season has taught us all about resiliency and gratitude. We've all come away having learned more about each other and ourselves, and created invaluable team memories. As a coach, I am so grateful for my talented and dedicated staff, our administration that's supported us to make this happen, and of course the athletes. It's all about the athletes, and it's so fulfilling to see them come away with personal growth and team success."
