Lumberjacks’ First Half Offensive Surge Keys 4-1 Victory Over Central Washington

MONMOUTH, Ore.---  Humboldt State (2-0-1) scored three of its four goals in the first 45 minutes to key its 4-1 victory over Central Washington this afternoon at the WOU Soccer Field in Monmouth, Ore.  Kendal Spencer scored the match's first two goals in the first 23 minutes while Brooke Weese and Kelsey Bess scored HSU's final two goals.

QUOTES FROM THE COACH: "I am really proud of the team today in all aspects," said head coach Grant Landy.  This was really our first road trip of the season and there are a lot of distractions on the road.  SO first and foremost, they took care of business today which is a sign of our progress."

"Our efficiency in the attack today was excellent," added Landy.  "13 shot with nine of frame and four goals.  So, we are learning about not only creating chances but taking care of them when we have the opportunities.  We have to enjoy this one though and get ready for our next tough opponent (Western Oregon) on Sunday.  Hopefully, we will have the same mindset and approach we had today."

FIRST HALF:  The Lumberjacks came out on first in the first half.  Kendal Spencer scored just 3:33 into the first half on a shot from the deep right side off a pass from Kelsey Bess.  HSU had a chance to double its lead seven minutes later, but Clara Lenihan's shot was stopped by Megan Fox.  The Lumberjacks took a 2-0 lead on Spencer's second goal of the match on a shot from the near side off a ball from Lenihan.  Central Washington (1-2) had a chance to cut into the deficit but Emily Darcy's shot was blocked by the HSU defense.  The Wildcats' Fox had two more saves in the 33rd and 39th minute one off the foot of the Lumberjacks' Mia Castaneda and the other off the foot of Brooke Weese.  HSU took a 3-0 lead in the final minutes of the half as Weese connected on a shot off the crossbar by Maya Davis off a pass from Julia Humphreys.

SECOND HALF:  Humboldt State sealed the victory in the 52nd minute when Bess connected on her first goal of the season.  Bess scored after Groom passed it to Spencer who then sent it to Bess in front of the net for the match's fourth goal.  Central Washington got on the board in the 84th minute on a goal by Bella Brown off a ball from Casey Park to make the final 'Jacks 4-1.

SPENCER:  Kendal Spencer has scored three goals in the HSU's last two matches including two today.  Two of her goals have been game-winners including today's first goal of the match which came from Kelsey Bess.  She also assisted on the Lumberjacks' last goal of the match along with Baylee Groom on a ball to Bess.

DEFENSE:  Humboldt State's defense has just given up two goals in its first three matches of the season.  Alexis Aguilar had one save in the first 78 minutes of the match today while Marisol Carmajo recorded one save in the final 12 minutes.
